How does the theme of survival manifest in Chapter 11 of The Breadwinner? “These are unusual times. They call for ordinary people to do unusual things, just to get by.” (Ellis, 2000, p.100) Mrs. Weera says this to Mother when Parvana will continue to dig bones. Explain why this statement is true. by Ms. Barletta

The life lesson and theme of chapter 11 is sometimes you will have to be forced to do something you don't wanna do. Not by someone but by yourself. Parvanas dug bones just to get by this horrible situation. They were able to afford food but it was still hard to afford things. So Parvana's preserved turned into a boy had to do many sacrifices and more. Ms, Weera told her mother this because she wanted to help Parvana be strong and persevere is my guess. I got this from Ellis,2000,pg 98-103. In all this explains how Parvana kept going even though she knew she didn't want to do this but still risked getting bombed.

This chapter is crazy. The chapter starts out with Parvana not keeping her promise to shauzia and told her mom all about the grave digging, but after a talk her mom relented to keep going for the money. Parvana buys a tray to but goods like gum and cigarettes on the tray. on page 103-104 There is a group of people all going to a soccer stadium so Parvana thought she could sell her goods to the people who were in the stadium. People came out from the stadium, thieves. Those thieves got their hands cut off as Parvana and Shauzia watched. this shows that ordinary people can do unusual things to get by because the thieves had to steal to try to get by. Parvana also does this in chapter 9 when she digs up a grave to get bones for money. (Ellis, 2000, p.100)

The survival theme of chapter 11 of the Breadwinner is desperate times call for desperate measures is developed when Parvana digs up bones. This is desperate because digging up bones of people is gross and just terrible, and since Parvana is just a kid those moments are probably gonna scar her for life. In summary Chapter 11 developed the theme of desperate times call for desperate measures because of how Parvana dug for bones.

The life lesson of Chapter 11, where Parvana matures up and doesn't make problems with Nooria. The theme is, sometimes you need to let things go. For example on page 101 it states "She hasn't said anything nasty to Parvana in ages. Or maybe its me who changed.". This means that Parvana has changed and doesn't argue with Nooria anymore. That is what I think the life lesson or theme in chapter 11 is.

The theme of survival manifests in chapter 11 of the breadwinner. Because Parvana dug up bones just to get money. And to get the trays it took only 2 weeks! But if she had her old envelope job it would take longer. So desperate times call for desperate measures. Like in page 100 it states "At the end of 2 weeks they had enough money to buy trays with straps that go around their neck" Parvana would get a lot of money from these bones. Which angered her mother I know this because in page 99 it states "Tomorrow you will go back to reading letters." This is because her mother didn't like the idea of her digging up bones. This statement is true because. Some people will do anything to survive or to gain money even if it costs their life. As after digging up the bones and Parvana telling her mom about her secret job she took out all the money.(Ellis,2000,Pg 99-100)

For example, page 100 of The Breadwinner states," There are unusual times. They call for ordinary people to do unusual things, just to get by."

Mrs. Weera's statement that "these are unusual times" requiring "ordinary people to do unusual things, just to get by," highlights the extreme measures individuals must take to survive under the Taliban's oppressive regime, as vividly demonstrated by Parvana's decision to dig up human bones for money.

In Chapter 11, the characters are forced to confront the harsh reality of their situation where conventional means of survival are impossible. Parvana's family, with her father imprisoned and women forbidden from working, faces starvation and the inability to pay for basic necessities like rent and lamp fuel. Parvana takes on the dangerous role of a boy, disguised as "Kaseem," and, with her friend Shauzia, finds an illicit way to make money by digging up human bones from a graveyard to sell to a bone broker.

The moral repugnance of disturbing graves is initially upsetting to Parvana's mother, who protests the act. However, Mrs. Weera's pragmatic perspective prevails, arguing that the desperate circumstances necessitate actions that would normally be considered morally troubling. This act is a powerful symbol of the desperation the people of Afghanistan face, willing to do anything to survive. The family ultimately accepts Parvana's earnings because survival outweighs the moral objections in their war-torn world.

In summary, Mrs. Weera's words encapsulate the novel's core theme of survival in the face of extreme oppression. Parvana's grave-digging, while disturbing, is an act of courageous necessity, demonstrating how extraordinary circumstances compel ordinary individuals, even a young girl, to take extreme measures to keep her family alive.

One theme in chapter 11 of The Breadwinner that I learned was that sometimes you have to take risks to survive. I know this because on page 100, the text states, "These are unusual times. They call for ordinary people to do unusual things, just to get by." This piece of text tells us that survival is so important that even when there are risky decisions to make, sometimes you just have to take those risks to stay alive. In conclusion, one life lesson that I learned from chapter 11 is that desperate times call for desperate measures.

The theme and life lesson I learned after reading chapter 11 of the breadwinner is that even when you feel unsure about someone or something you still have to do to provide and get by, for example on page 100 Parvana mother said, " These unusual times. They call for ordinary people to do unusual things, just to get by", other type of example is when Parvana and Shauzia went into the stadium, I think this supports my idea of this chapters theme and life lesson because even when Parvana had a uneasy feeling when everyone wasn't cheering in the stadium, but she still stayed in the stadium because she thought she would make some money, To sum it up this is why I think that, even when you feel unsure about someone or something you still have to do it to provide and get by is the theme and life lesson of chapter 10 of the breadwinner.

I learned this because of pg.104, where one of the soldiers said, "See how we punish thieves? We cut off one of their hands! See what we do!" Showing that when people do bad things, such as stealing, it leads to bad consequences, such as getting your hand amputated. It also shows that when people steal or rob other people, the consequences in Taliban are much more harsh then the repercussions in America. 🫰

Mrs. Weera’s statement to Mother highlights how the family’s ordinary lives have been overturned by the Taliban’s rule, forcing them into extraordinary actions to survive. The statement is true because the family, once accustomed to a more normal, if still difficult, life, is now forced to take on extreme measures for survival. Parvana, as an example, has had to become a breadwinner by adopting the socially unacceptable role of a grave digger, a dangerous task normally reserved for men, just to earn money for food and to stay alive. "These are unusual times. They call for ordinary people to do unusual things, just to get by," as quoted in The Breadwinner (Ellis, 2000, p.100). Before the Taliban, Parvana and her family were ordinary people, but they are now in a situation that requires them to perform “unusual” acts like a young girl working as a grave digger.

The theme I learned that really spoke to me was, " Kindness will always be found in evil ". Page 102-104 states, "All of a sudden one of the soldiers took out a sword, raised it above his head and brought it down on the man's arm. Blood flew in every direction. The man cried out in pain. Next to Parvana, Shauzia started screaming. Parvana clamped her hand over Shauzia's mouth and pulled her down to the floor of the stadium stands. The rest

of the stadium was quiet. There was still no cheering. "Keep your heads down, boys," a kind voice above Parvana said. "There will be time enough when you are old to see such things." The cigarettes and gum had fallen off their trays, but the men around them gathered up the spilled items

and returned them to the girls." This evidence shows that even in dark times, people still have a heart. Or in other words, In the darkness where the shadows envy each other's darkness and abyss, an individual's soul that brightens with kindness, is all you need to illuminate the absence of light. Which is absolutely significant in desperate and dark times and measures. Which is also why, this shouted out to me the most. Nevermore, this theme should be valued and seen and is incredibly significant to learn in life because not only is it a sign of hope, its a sign that not everyone is who you think they are, people truly do have a kind soul you just need to see that. So take this to heart as a life lesson, and enjoy the light that has been revealed. ~Aria Trujillo

One theme I learned in chapter 11 of the bread winner is that people will do what they are called for. Ms. Weera’s statement is true because if we take example of the young Talib on pages 112-113 we can tell that he was once a normal kid that probably got education before the Taliban ruled ,based on the description that Parvana said, on page 112 states,”Just before she left, Parvana caught a glimpse of a young talib man too young to have a beard.” Even in between 112-113 it states he was holding up a rope strung with four severed hands, like beads on a necklace. He was laughing and showing off his booty to the crowd. Parvana hoped that Shauzia didn’t see.” Based on both of these excerpts we can tell that this once ordinary young man was once a boy that got education, but as a cause of the Talib he has turned into one of the Talibs that the Taliban want, as using hands as beads and having blood shed on his own hands. To sum it up Ms. Weera’s statement is honest and can be provided with evidence in the book.

Her words state,"These unusual times. They call for ordinary people to do things, just to get by." This tells me that when people are in a certain situation it calls for unusual measures. Another piece of evidence is in the end of chapter 11 when the man said,"Go home boys.Go home and remember good things". The mans words tell me on how he cares on the sight of what kids see and this gives Parvana and Shauzia the power to get their things and leave.

In page 99, it states, "Parvana took the money out of her pocket, then dug the rest of the money out of the shoulder bag. She put it all on the floor for everyone to see. "All that money, just for digging up graves," Mrs. Weera breathed." (Ellis, 2000, pg 99) This evidence shows how people will do anything for money in this harsh life. Overall, people in desperate times like the people in Afghanistan do desperate things like digging up graves for cash to feed their families.
