Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of a nation over foreign countries, changing the government, economic system and life for the citizens living there. The scramble for Africa was a time in history when, in 1807, the British outlawed the slave trade and the Europeans turned to seizing African colonies by exploring and making money from their resources like cotton, rubber, and ivory that could be turned into economic profit. In time, more countries such as Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Portugal also wanted to get a chunk of Africa. Many people have different ideas of what the driving force was behind the imperialism of Africa. Some thought it was competition and national pride. All the European countries wanted land for resources, power, and free labor. therefore, the countries raced to grab as much land in Africa as they possibly could. Each country wanted to prove that it was the most powerful. Others believe technological developments is the cause, this is because the European countries felt they had the technology to take land from Africa. They had more advanced communication, transportation, weapons, and medication than the Africans did. Another belief is economic growth and wealth for European countries is the driving force because European countries took over Africa to profit economically from African resources. Also, they wanted to create a market for selling African resources, and they imported and exported goods to make money. These European countries wanted to make a profit and grow the economy in Africa. Also, people think European cultural attitudes towards Africans was the main reason for colonizing Africa. The Europeans wanted to teach the Africans, who they thought were inferior savages. They compared them to a “half devil and half child.” So, they tried to teach them to be like a European and follow the European culture. This is demonstrated by the Europeans exports good from Africa to and become rich, the Europeans help start up the industrial revolution, and when the Europeans took over more land, they gained economic profit. Overall, economics was the driving force of European imperialism.

In conclusion, the driving force behind the European imperialism of Africa was for Europe’s economic growth. There was a race to colonize Africa by Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Portugal. Once they did, the Europeans exported goods and resources from Africa to Europe, which made them wealthy. The Europeans, who helped start the industrial revolution, collected African resources, such as ivory, rubber, metals, food, and materials for clothing. They shipped them back to Europe and produced goods and products in their factories. The Europeans used the goods and resources that they brought from Africa and marketed them to different countries. Thus, economic growth and wealth was the main reason that powered European imperialism in Africa.
