  • In the process a plastic bag of cleansing fluid is infused into the patients abdomen through a special tube know as a catheter. In the cleaning process the membrane in the abdomen is used as a natural filter. The waste product and excess water are removed from the body into the dialysis fluid through the peritoneal membrane. This is done while the person performs their normal daily activities. after 4-12 hours, the fluid must be drained from the abdomen. A new sterile fluid is than instilled into the abdomen and the treatment starts all over again.

  • In the procedure a machine aids the patient in removing waste and excess water from the body through out the night when the patient is sleeping. This last about 8-10 hours at night. When the patient wakes up before the disconnection from the machine, a last fill in solution is infused in the peritoneal cavity which the patient will have in its abdomen through out the day.
