President James Monroe articulated a set of principles in 1823 which basically meant that America won't intervene in European affairs and that America won't allow anymore European colonization in America. This helped America earn its own identity as the country was finally making the world stage.

Battle of Gettysburg (1863)

During the year of the Emancipation Proclamation, in a small Pennsylvania crossroad town of Gettysburg, Robert E. Lee's invading army sustained a horrible defeat in which it basically sealed the fate of the Confederacy and its "peculiar institution". After two years, the war was over and before the end of the decade the South was transformed by Reconstruction.

Breakup of Northern Securities (1902–04)

In 1902, US President Theodore Roosevelt pursued the progressive goal of curbing the enormous economic and political power of giant corporate trusts by reinstating the nearly defunct Sherman Antitrust Act to win a lawsuit that caused the collapse of the enormous railroad conglomerate Northern Securities Company. . . (U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1904). Roosevelt continued this "trust-busting" policy by filing lawsuits against 43 other large corporations over the next seven years..

He's death caused even more awareness on the corruption in the government....today we nationally celebrate MLK as a American holiday every year.
