In the Italian Cenerentola Cinderella story, it is focused on a girl named Zezolla, whose father, remarries a harsh woman with six daughters. In the beginning, Zezolla is treated with kindness by her new family members, but later in the story the true color of the stepmother shows. Zezolla is treated bad, she is forced to work around the house and given the name Cenerentola which mean Cinderella.

When the prince goes out on a trip, he forgets Zezolla's request to ask the fairy for the gift she asked for. In result of that, the prince's ship gets stuck. After realizing what he had forgotten, the prince asked for the fairy for help, and they had flown to send a magical tree to Zezolla as she wished. The tree ends up being able to transform her into a beautiful princess whenever she wishes, making her go to the royal balls without anyone knowing. Every time she attended one, the prince's servant fails to keep track of her because of the coins and jewels she had left behind.

In the end, the prince finds out who Zezolla is by the slipper she lost at one of the balls she attended. When Zezolla tried on the slipper, it had fit perfectly and revealed her to be the magical princess. Zezolla had been crowned queen, without her stepsisters in her life, while they had been consumed by jealousy, and did not fight back anymore.

Similarities between Italy's Cenerentola Cinderella and traditional Cinderella

Two key similarities between the Italy's Cenerentola Cinderella story and the traditional Cinderella story is how both Cinderella and Cenerentola were mistreated by the stepmother and stepsisters. They force Cinderella and Cenerentola to do all the chores around the house while the stepsisters get all of the attention.

Another similarity is the transformation the fairy godmother and the fairies did for both of them. In both stories the fairy godmother and the fairies enable Cenerentola and Cinderella is attending the royal balls. Both stories, change their appearance to go undercover at the balls and the prince to fall in love in both of the stories.

Differences between Italy's Cenerentola Cinderella and traditional Cinderella

Two key differences between Italy's Cenerentola Cinderella's Story and the traditional Cinderella story are how in the traditional Cinderella story, the fairy godmother grants her the wishes from rags into riches in a way but in the Cenerentola Cinderella's Story, she had to get the magic tree and the fairies to be able to get what she wanted.

The second difference is how the prince in the traditional Cinderella story, the prince went around town searching for the right girl and would not stop till he found the girl. In Cenerentola's story, it is the servant at first to go out and search for the girl instead of the prince.

Reflections of Culture - Cenerentola

Three examples of cultural references that were included in Cenerentola are:

The stepsisters in Cenerentola which reflected the importance of family structure and the rough patches shown throughout households. The dynamic of the large family shoes the example of favoritism and the importance of hierarchy in a family.

Another example is the food shown in the story. The amount of food and quality of food shown at the grand feasts exemplify the Italian culture. The feasts bring the community together as it does in the Italian culture as well.

One more example is the fairy represented by a dove. The guidance and knowledge the fairy has is a good example and role model for Cenerentola. This was seen especially because she never really had a mother figure in her life and was on her own for majority of the time, so the fairy was the one true person guiding her.

The Moral of the Story of Cenerentola

The theme or moral of the story of Cenerentola is shown around the thought that kindness, patience, and hard work will, in time, be rewarded, even while being mistreated. She had stayed humble through all of her time cleaning ultimately led her to the chance to transform into something magnificent. This story highlights the negatives and the corruption of the power of jealousy and envy. The true beauty comes within and not on the outside, and hard work will pay off in time and for the better.
