"So you see, if you fall into a lion's pit, the reason the lion will tear you to pieces is not because it's hungry-- be assured, zoo animals are amply fed- or because it's bloodthirsty, but because you've invaded its territory." (p.43)

The lion in the quote acts like a human by showing who is running the place.

"A close relationship will also mean protection from the other members of the pride." (p.45)

They both share protection and pride for whoever they care about no matter if its for another animal or human.

" Gita , my bird it's for a sake. What if Piscine had stuck his hand through the bars of the cage one day to touch the pretty orange fur. Better a goat than him, no?" (p.36)

This shows that animals aren't what they seem to be and Pi's father wanted to teach him.

" Spiritual worry was aliens to him; it was financial worry that rocked hid being." (p.65)

This shows that Pi's father wasn't for Pi following three different religions. Faith was'nt a big thing for Pi's father.

"If there's only one nation in the sky, shouldn't all passports be valid for it?" (p.74)

This describes Pi being open minded of all religion.

"And that's it. An entire childhood memorialized in four nearly irrelevant photographs." (p.87)

Pi is independent because he makes his own decision and he also doesn't care about his past and didn't fit in.
