As a result of her rebellion, Yad Vashem recognized Irena Sendler and was rewarded with the Righteous Among the Nations medal in 1965. She sadly died of an illness in Warsaw, Poland, on May 12, 2008. She helped two thousand children along with the Żegota, protecting them till the end going to extreme measures to keep them safe.

Irena Sendler would not have been so widely known as she is now if it weren't for the help of three American teenage girls 60 years later. One of the young teenage girls stumbled across a picture of Irena in a memorial holocaust museum. After introducing the other girls to the topic, they all came together to research more about her and even called out to the Jewish foundation of the Righteous. After finding out Sendler was still alive, they started to raise money, and when a Jewish community found out about this, they helped fund their trip to Poland to meet Irena Sendler. After this, they started to spread more about who Irena Sendler was.

She was brutally beaten, and they tortured her endlessly. Even inducing mental torture. Enduring endless torture and pain, she still refused to give away any information. This eventually led her to get the death sentence. When she was led to the execution site, it was revealed that the Żegota had paid the Gestapo for her release. This event led to Irena faking her death as the horns blew indicating her death and so she led a new identity and continued to her life long mission helping Jewish children escape their dreadful demise.

Irena Sendler, first known as Irena Krzyżanowska, was born in Warsaw on February 15, 1910. She was a Polish social worker. Her father died after contracting typhus from a patient he was treating. The Jewish community leaders then offered to help fund her education to her mother. Sendler studied Polish literature at Warsaw University. She was suspended for 3 years from the university after protesting about the ghetto branch system at the university. She had 2 children, a daughter and a son who sadly passed away on September 23, 1999.

During the war, although she could not guarantee the safety of the children, she promised that she would at least try. She wrote down their names and families on a small piece of tissue paper and placed it in a milk jar, which she would protect with her life. She was prepared to throw the milk jar out of the window as long as the Nazis did not take it away. After the long war, she dug up that jar and tried to reunite the children with their parents, although there were not many surviving parents.

She was the Head of the children's section of Żegota( a Polish underground Council that aided young Jewish children. She then started to smuggle young Jewish children from the ghetto and hid them at hospitals, orphanages, schools, etc, and gave them new names and identities to prevent the German soldiers from finding out.
