Documents

I like the idea of dual citizenship as a good example for students to analyze. Weston also touched on dual citizenship so it could be a good theme to roll with. A case study of the implications of giving up one’s second citizenship could be a great way for students to inquire about this topic. Is there a significance about the placement of the items? Did you intentionally place the Canadian items front and centre, with the Brazilian items in the background?

Shoes

I quite like this theme of connecting to the land and it seems as though each member in our group has highlighted it. Your post actually combines the connection to the land with the connection to your family. An interesting way to start a class could be to show this picture and ask the class what is about to happen… The answers would likely be reflections of their own identities.

Laws

I found myself questioning this one the most. I understand why you have included it here as a part of citizenship. That being said, I am weary about the phrase “a good citizen obeys the law.” There is something too Orwellian about it. I hope instead that people understand the laws and understand that on rare occasion, breaking the law is the morally right thing to do. This question of right, wrong and the law, would be a fascinating one to dissect with students.

Recycle Bin

I heard somewhere that Calgary is the cleanest city in North America. It is likely due to initiatives like this one that the city is so clean. I think this recycle bin would be a good stepping off point for students to analyze the geographical and economic impact of garbage, recycling and caring for the land. In the news, they could follow Canada’s plans to increase its use of renewable energy by 2030.

Photo 1 (Dual Citizenship):

I also like the dual citizenship picture, I think it ties into immigration, which is a hot current event right now and is an important aspect of Canada's history. I also think it gives us a window into globalization and cooperation among international communities. It could also be a great entry point into the question: What does it mean to be a citizen? What does it mean to be Canadian? What is the immigration process? After reading Connor's comments I am now also wondering if you purposely placed the Canadian documents in front of the Brazilian ones? Furthermore if you did does this mean you value your Canadian Citizenship more? What is your rationale for ordering the items in such a way? Anyways I think tackling Canada's pluralistic society or multiculturalism is a good way to go so I'd be happy to run with this photo and topic.

Photo 2 (Shoes):

"Family ties are key to understand peoples’ identity and their way of thinking" I also think family ties are foundational to identity. More than this picture, I like the idea of students bringing their own pictures of their families. I think this is also a great entry point into diversity of families... different families, from different cultures all living together in a pluralistic society because, as I look at what your family looks like, I'm struck by the similarities and differences of what my family looks like. I think this photo actually ties in to your first photo quite well. Who we are, how we got here, and what identity means to us starts with family.

Photo 3 (The Law):

My first thought here isn't so Orwellian as Connors, in fact it leads me to think about what it means to break the law and what it means to follow the laws not because they are the law, but because it's the right thing to do. And although this photo is an example of a rebel who has turned their back on societal obligations, it's very effective at inspiring the opposite. I think citizenship is very much rooted in some altruistic compulsion of empathy and to want the best for your community. But then I do go down Connor's path and start to wonder, well why do I need Big Brother telling me what's right and what's wrong? I mean people clearly choose to follow the law or not anyways. What purpose does the law serve and where would we be without it? What does it mean to live in a society where we are free to choose whether or not to break the law?

Photo 4 (Recycling Bin):

Stewards of the environment. This ties into your previous law photo quite well for me because my first thought is about people who choose to recycle even-though no one is compelled by law to do so. This is a completely altruistic endeavor and one that is so popular there are bins everywhere for us to go out of our way to separate recyclables from non-recyclables. This says so much about citizenship, but it also speaks to our role as biological organisms trying to strike a balance with the world that gives us life. I love the fact that living in Canada means we care about the environment. That our cities are continuously voted some of the cleanest cities on in the world. That our resource rich nation and province has gone out of its way, recently, to take a stand even if that hurts in the short term.
