"Codec" is a technical name for "compression/decompression". It also stands for "compressor/decompressor" and "code/decode".

For example, when you rip a song from an audio CD to your computer, the Player uses the Windows Media Audio codec by default to compress he song into a compact WMA file. When you play that WMA file (or any WMA file that might be streamed from a website),  the Player uses the Windows Media Audio codec to decompress the file so the music can be played through your speakers.

However this is at the cost of quality (smaller file= lower quality and lager files= higher quality)

JPG files uses Lossy compression which causes the files to be as small as they can be now, ( lossy compression or irreversible compression is the class of data encoding methods that uses inexact approximations and partial data discarding to represent the content. These techniques are used to reduce data size for storage, handling, and transmitting content.)

There are two types of video resolution. There is standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD). 
Display resolution is not measured in dots per inch. It's measured in pixels per inch
The lowest resolution for an HD video is 1280x720p. 
Full HDTVs provides a resolution for 1920x1080p but some TVs can surpass that.

  • LOSSY CODEC: A lossy codec is a codec that reduces quality by an amount to achieve the compression.​

    • LOSSLESS CODECS: Lossless codecs are typically used when archiving data in a compressed form while holding all the original quality. Lossless codecs are often seen in applications such as after effects where you don’t want any visual or audio quality loss.

This applies to film and video cameras, game, computer graphics, motion capture systems.  
    Frame rate and human vision: The temporal sensitivity  and resolution of human vision depends on the type and characteristics of the visual stimulus and differs between individuals. The visual systen can process upwards of 1000 images per second but is not seen by the untrained eye. 150-240 is where the motion looks most realisitic.  For computer screens, tv's etc 50-90 HZ is appropriate in most studies conducted. This is known as the slicker fusion threshold and is why 60 HZ Is preffered
