Kids start to beat up Melinda when they figure out that she called the cops. "My throat squeezes shut, as if two hands of black fingernails are clamped on my windpipe" (Andersen 27). Melinda feels a lot of anxiety from what happened at the party, and people are bringing the situation back up. The black nails around Melinda's neck could signify the darkness that she feels when her classmates bring up that horrid night. She feels as if her life is a rapidly tightening inward spiral, slowly squeezing her to death, just like this hand, before it ultimately leads to her demise.

Childhood Memories

Melinda is thinking back to a time before her life was ruined."Daddy set me high in an apple tree. It was like falling into a storybook, yummy and red and the leaves not shaking a bit. Bees bumbled through the air, so stuffed with apple they couldn't be bothered to sting me" (Andersen 65). She got raped underneath a tree, so she's probably trying to visualize good times in the apple orchard to block out the memory. This is important to the character of Melinda because it shows how young and innocent she used to be, and how ruined she feels. She bitterly misses her younger self that hadn't experienced this great suffering, and the different ways that she describes the trees in the orchard memory and her rape story proves this.

Andy finds Melinda at lunch and hones in on her, simply for the fun of terrifying her. "It feels like the Prince of Darkness has swept his cloak over the table. The lights dim. I shiver. Andy stands behind me to flirt with Emily. I lean into the table to stay as far away from him as I can. The table saws me in half" (Andersen 89). Andersen is trying to make us feel the fear that is consuming Melinda. She probably feels as if the lights dim because every time she thinks of this night, she is enveloped in the darkness that fell over her when her innocence was taken away from her. Andy is her monster, terrifying her just for the thrill of it. He knows exactly what he is doing when he creeps up on her, and her mental state reflects this.

Melinda gets in school suspension for cutting class so often. She describes the detention room by saying, "It's a classroom painted white, with uncomfortable chairs and a lamp that buzzes like an angry hive" (Andersen 116). I feel as if this buzzing could be a representation of how her brain feels- empty, but angry. She doesn't know how to feel; that was taken away from her the night of the party. But somewhere, in the back of her mind, she knows how terrible her situation is. And the description of this classroom almost sounds like a mental asylum, which could mean that Melinda could feel as if she's going insane.
