Hello Everyone my name is Stephanie Moody. Am excited to graduate this semester from MDC. My main campus i have taken the most classes is North Campus. Both of Parents are Nicaraguan and i have visited my family there as well i even went to school during the summer when i was younger. What it important to me is my education and my goal is to get my bachelor degree and earn my master degree for psychology hopefully in my top university which is Nova. I hope to own my own business for talk therapy i feel it's important for people to normalize therapy and counseling and shouldn't be look down upon or been seen as something for only people with issues. This pandemic has taught us the importance of human interaction and how our own mental health can be effected and right now my career is in high demand and am happy too see people are taking there mental health more seriously. I decided to major in psychology because of my middle school counselor i was going through a tough time in school navigating my emotions and going through death in my family and seeing how it affected my family and it impacted me. And by speaking to a counselor she help me understand my emotion and i felt like my emotions where being valued. I became apart of peer counseling where i help other people in my school. And i saw how you can help people by helping them analyzed not only there feelings but others. Speaking to someone in need when there at there lowest movement can make an impact. I love anime am a huge weeb, i love to write on my spare time about my deepest emotions and i love to read. My goal is to go all the way for my master degree and start my own business of talk therapy for family and individual therapy. My major is psychology and i really like to talk to others and help others navigate there emotion. So i can't wait for what the future have for me within my field.

What research tool, idea, or methodology caught your attention?

During the session with Professor Duque the methodology that caught my attention the most was kanopy because it was the first time i ever heard that within MDC research tools and services we could access free documentary videos and movies. Professor Duque advised us that if we ever needed inspiration for a topic that within kanopy we could watch the documentary provide since there are broad selection and various topic to explore and could help us pick a topic to write for our research paper.

What topic did you select to research? Why did you pick this topic?

The topic i want to research is how are schools within the Miami dade county public schools system are handeling the issues the pandemic has caused on students education . I look at the Miami herald and currently there are teaches shortage in 2022. Since we have a new variant which is omicron it has caused many students and teacher and staff to be unattend in school and now anyone with an educational certification is being hired in order to fill the roles of missing teacher. This topic interested me because when i was a senior between 2019-2020 when we started to quarantine and i had to continue my education my last year of high school within this pandemic it changed the way schools educated us students. And now that i has been in college for almost two years it is important to know whats going currently going on within public schools since i was apart of the system many years ago.

What research tool, idea, or methodology was known to you but was good to listen to again?

The research tools that where refreshing to listen to again for me is opposing viewpoint because what i love are the article they provide on gale in context. I feel like it gives you the inspiration you need in order to write your research paper because of how much important information they share in each article and within each article includes a source citation in which they all ready have the article citation. But the academic search complete was good to listen again because i remember how helpful it was during my ENC 1102 course. It really did help me during my research papers because you can find different materials to read and use beside articles there also newspaper and the type of document your looking like an biography for example. And the best part is that each publication are from scholarly sources.

Garcia, Emma, and Elaine Weiss. Covid-19 and Student Performance, Equity, and U.S Education Policy . 10 Sept. 2020, https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED610971.pdf.

My first article talks about all the changes students and teachers had to undergo within the pandemic. This has been a learning experience for all of us because we were not prepared to virtual teach students all cross Miami Dade county. And many students do not have computers or tablets at home nor internet access. The student's education was also given at a slower learning rate if a teacher was not proficient in using a computer. We needed to make up time by increasing the amount of learning time in each class and decrease the amount of students.

Schweig, Jonathan et al. "Changes in school composition during the COVID-19 Pandemic". Rand.Org, 2021, https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/research_reports/RRA1000/RRA1037-2/RAND_RRA1037-2.pdf.

Within this second source it really puts into perspective how students are currently being evaluated in school. As we know every year we would have the EOC ( End of the course test) within the Miami Dade County schools. But assessment have been lower because of how the pandemic has effected students across the county. And for many individuals these test scores are important because it determine if you repeat the grade or you pass and move to the next grade level. But most importantly for students who are senior and graduating in need of these test scores for colleges and university in order to be evaluated properly. It really express how we should monitor student performance in school throughout the pandemic.

Ferren, Megan. Remote Learning and School Reopenings What Worked and What Didn’t. 6 July 2021, https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED613768.pdf.

The article indicates that a lack of extracurricular activities has significantly affected students’ learning during the pandemic. The researcher’s strong stand on the effects of extracurricular activities cannot be downplayed in comprehensive education. Peers create a social bond outside the classroom setup during extracurricular activities, which also helps them discover different interests, realize their talents, and promote their physical well-being. The researcher further argues that there is a connection with the school developed by students during extracurricular activities like sports that reduces the instances of school dropouts. Due to the pandemic, these activities have been limited for Miami Dade County Public Schools system.

Through out the semester It’s been an interesting turn of events because with each activity we have had I felt each videos had a message and when we had to do research on our own about issues in our community I felt like it was also an eye opener on things we over look. With each activity you never know what to expect and that’s what made each activity exciting because each of them are unique. I enjoyed each writing activity. But the CAS assignments where my favorite ones to write. I felt that they were inspirational in their own way. I feel that they made you think about your role as person within your community. Because we live our lives and we and we don’t think too deeply about how much climate change has in increase. In CAS 1 with the story of stuff I was very intrigued because I didn’t expect to seat and think about how much power corporation have in our society. The videos that I watched where the story of broke and the story of cap and trade. I all ways wonder why we have to pay taxes because our government is all ways asking for more money, and it makes you wonder where our taxes being contributed to and of course they invest in the military and that important but there are oil and gas companies that have tax subsidies in which they don’t have to pay there fair share of taxes. Especially right now with today gas prices that have skyrocket in which we are paying more for gas while gas and oil companies are making profit off of us. The Worst part is that these gas companies are polluters and there using up our natural resources. The more fossil fuel we used the more climate change well continue too have. But even with gas companies it’s political as well because their corporations have a huge influence in who we vote for. We need stronger laws for cap and trade because industrial companies increase carbon emissions and they buy permits from one other and continue to be the problem in carbon emission. It is important to think about climate change because it affects the planet that we live on. We should be more involved in what our government is doing on this issue so it makes we want to look deeper into political candidates.

Another activity that I enjoy was CAS 3 where we had to watch TED talk video and the video that I chose to write about was about nuclear power. I already had this preconceive notion about nuclear power because when you think of nuclear your brain switches to nuclear weapons or nuclear power plant. In history we learn about chernobyl like what happens to people when exposed to high level of radiation can lead to serious health problems and Fukushima with their explosion affecting the citizen who lived there. With nuclear you have unpredictability and danger. But when I watched the video on how fear of nuclear power is hurting the environment I was very shocked of the information that was given. Nuclear is the safest way to make reliable power. In the video on ted talk with Michael Shellenberger he spoke about how do we get plentiful reliable electricity and energy without destroying the climate. Solar and wind generate electricity about 10 to 30% of the time. And using solar and wind would not only have us depend on the weather but also generate too much power. Nuclear actually produces four times less carbon emissions than solar does. Renewable energy cost us alot of energy. And the most shocking was that over 1.8 million people lives where saves by using nuclear power . I had no clue that Solar panels produce more waste than nuclear reactors. I figure since sunlight is a natural resource it should be the best alternative way to save the planet. But if data can prove how beneficial nuclear power can cause clean energy we should invest more than in nuclear power. If we educate people on this and change people perspective like how they change my view on nuclear power that’s supposed to a harmful and dangerous. Instead of using it for to hurt other it can actually benefit us and the planet.

Documentation

First video : The Story of Broke

https://www.storyofstuff.org/movies/story-of-broke/

Within this video i really like how it puts in perspective how our taxes are being use on unnecessary things. Even though it is important to have our military to be prepare in case of war were to break out. But our taxes are being invested in companies polluting the air and using up all our fossil fuels. They allow companies to do whatever projects or production as they please . Instead of investing our taxes in places that will continue to increase climate change . We as citizen need our taxes invested into companies who will use renewable energy and will not be apart of deforesation. Going Green and recycling is a great choice we can make because where taking the environment into consideration. But it can also create jobs like placing solar energy in homes and the rest of our taxes can go into our education. We can make the goverment have oil and gas compaines pay there share to make a better future. We have to make sure they invest our money in what's good for the planet and stop letting polluter get rich off our plant.

Second video: The Story of Cap & Trade

https://www.storyofstuff.org/movies/story-of-cap-and-trade/

I really enjoy this video because it get's into details how industrial companies increase carbon emissions and instead of trying to reducing carbon emission these companies buy off permits from each other. The Cap and Trade allows these polluters to have free permits and sell extra permits whoever needs some. Where not able to reach our goal in decreasing carbon because polluters keep gaining money that we can use to conserve natural resource like fossil fuels. We allow them to receive offset permits while they use our money to increase climate change. This video inspire you to be more involve in goverment because we need to pressure for stronger laws to leave conserve the carbon in the ground and design a plan that will benefit the earth and save our planet.

Reflection

Consumption relates to me as a global citizen because i am apart of the problem. Because as a consumer when i invest my money in a product and it's delivered to me. I am contributing to these companies to continue to use up our fossil fuels. Our economy runs on burning fossil fuels because every time there a ships with good or trucks carrying supplies they use fossil fuel and coal. When factories are manufacturing there products they are using up our natural resources. And i shouldn't invest my money in corporations that do not care about benefiting our environment. I need to be part of the solution and not the problem.

After watching the story of stuff it made me realize that i need to buy products with less packaging. But also that as a citizen i need to take action because we need stronger laws so corporation won't have power to continue to pollute our planet. We need to start to have energy conservation and waste management. Definitely need to promote programs that are going green and educate the public on what we can do to make a difference. We need to get out on the beaches and pick up plastic water bottle and trash we leave behind on our shores. Within our world we share it with animals and other human beings across the globe and we can make a difference through educating and volunteering to help make a change.

D O C U M E N T A T I O N :

Article 1 : How can schools detect potentially violent students? Researchers have an answer.

Oxford high school left many terrifed on how schools can make the right decision on determining if a student who threaten to hurt others verbally are serious enough to commited a horrible crime. It's a tough call to detemine if a student is lying and has a potiential weapon. There is a method that can evaluate the threat at hand by having a threat assessment teams. But not all states have threat assessment system in place since each states has there own laws that can either required or not required this program to be in place in schools. When you have a threat assessment team situations like the oxford high school shooting can be preventable. It's important to see which students are showing troubling signs that are evidence of a real threat. School officials are to consider questions, such as whether the student communicated an intent to harm others, whether he or she had offered an explanation or apology, whether there is a way to resolve the conflict, whether mental health services are needed and whether law enforcement should be involved. Teachers are well positioned to spot disturbing ideas and emotions that might surface in class assignments such as artwork or essays. But most importantly you must gather information beside the child and parents.

Article 2: After Michigan Killings, Students prasied shooter drills. But do they really work?

In this New York Times article it really questions whether or not its right to have students go through shooter drills. Parents and Teachers don't want students to mentally be so focused on gun violence . Since the pandemic it has affect many students mental health and now with Oxford High School makes students fear a situation like michigan could happened in there schools. The students who went through the tramatic experience they barricaded doors with desks and chairs. They covered windows and then huddled silently in corners or bathroom stalls. Students had scissors and calculators. When a pathway look clear, they ran. The teachers and students remembered their active shooter drills the students feel that it save them. But still there school lost 4 students and multiple students where injuried even with tatics you can't stop gun violence within schools.

Reflection:

What i learned in each article is the importance of having a plan in case of a potiental school shooting and stopping a school shooter from committing murder. As a psychology major it's very important too look into the emotional well being of others and especially these students for example. Since school shooting are becoming too common we need to have serious conversation with students. We not only need to reassure them that we will protect them with our lives but also that they can come to us confidentially to report strange behavior from students within the schools. Social media plays a big part in today society and those who use any social media platform are free to express themselves through videos, pictures, quotes or memes. It's an outlet for many people and there platform can be used for positivity of negativity and hatred. With the parkland shooting which happend here in our state it show how nikolas cruz was all ready mentally distrubed by how he tortured animals on his instagram and students saw on his social media page. He also had behavior issued and brought knifes too school that got him expelled. He had violent tendency. Since i do see myself becoming a school counselor ( Guide Counsler) . I know the first step of action is too look into the student life as a whole there behavioral conduct in school, do they have a police records. Have they been bullied? Do they have depression or suicidal thoughts? It's also important to view the student social media as well and their messages and notified the police of any threath they made and have them to search into the student bag in case they are carrying a gun.

Works Cited

Goldstein, Dana. “After Michigan Killings, Students Praised Shooter Drills.

Video: 1 How fear of nuclear power is hurting the environment

Within this video Michael Shellenberger was very adamant about how we are in clean energy crisis . Fossils fuel is increasing faster than clean energy. Modern fuel is a necessity in poor countries. What has been declining in this revolution for clean energy is nuclear. Data shows how solar and wind energy barely makes half of nuclear energy. The united nations intergovernment panel on climate change says that nuclear provides more power because it provides low carbon energy. 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nuclear energy is the least popular energy to use. There are three kinds of fears when it comes to nuclear energy which are the effects it will cause to plants ( because plants such as trees help us breath) , waste of nuclear energy and using nuclear energy as a weapon. What people don't know is that nuclear is the safest way to make reliable power. But if we go back to history and look at the accidental data such as Fukushima and Chernobyl those situations make people afraid of what could happen if we use nuclear power but the nuclear waste is actually very little from one plant. And when it comes to using nuclear weapon we have to use plutonium to fuel our own power plant. In order to resolve our clean energy crisis it comes from within ourselves to preserve our planet.

Video:2 Why I changed my mind about nuclear power

Michael Shellenberger gets into the main purpose of the video. How do we get plentiful reliable electricity and energy without destroying the climate. Solar and wind generate electricity about 10 to 30% of the time. And using solar and wind would not only have us depend on the weather but also generate too much power. Nuclear actually produces four times less carbon emissions than solar does. Renewable energy cost us alot of energy. . Scientst are creditable doing research regarding but there was not much evidence increase of cancer in chernobyl health effect in bekarius, ukraine, russia. And michael shellenberger talk about the lack of radiation exposure was collectioned in russsian survey for chernobyl and fukushima had inaccurate death toll taken during that event . Air Population kills 7 miilion people annually while nuclear is already the safest way to make reliable electricity. And has save 1.8 millions lives with nuclear power.

Reflection:

I feel like in our society today nuclear power does tie in alot with what is happening in Russian and Ukraine. Because in this point in time we don't know if we will have war coming into our shores. And the main country i remember having nuclear weapons is north korea, russian, cuba and the united states. And in Fukushima we have seen the devasting results of how much destruction and pain and suffering it causes too people. But i have no clue that it could be use for a better purpose. Instead of using it to harm others we could use nuclear power plants to produce electricity. I had no clue that Solar panels produce more waste than nuclear reactors. I firgure since sunlight is a natural resource it should be the best alternative way to save the planet. But if data can prove how beneficial nuclear power is in reducing clean energy we should only invest more than that. Why wait more years and using up all our natural resources when we could preserve them. We should try to rethink the use of nuclear power . According to the intergovernmental panel on climate change said that " Nuclear produces four times less carbon pollution than solar." We really need more education on these issue in class room to help spark innovated ideas to the younger generation so they can understand what this planet is up against and find a solution to save the planet .

source :

How fear of nuclear power is hurting the environment
"We're not in a clean energy revolution; we're in a clean energy crisis," says climate policy expert Michael Shellenberger. In this passionate talk, he explains why it's time to overcome longstanding fears of the technology, and why he and other environmentalists believe it's past time to embrace nuclear as a viable and desirable source of clean power.
Michael Shellenberger

https://www.ted.com/talks/michael_shellenberger_why_i_changed_my_mind_about_nuclear_power

Video Planned Obsolescene: How companies trick you into buying a new phone

Reflection

While Scrolling through Planet A i came across an interesting video that caught my attention. My mother and i had a conversation the other day about iphones. Currently my mom has iphone 6 plus which came around 2015. Which would make her phone seven years old. Her phone has work properly in till this year the camera shake constantly and it's unable to position itself to take an picture of a person or object. And my mom mentioned to me that she felt that the apple company makes our iphone last a certain amount of years so we can buy the lastest one. During this video the presenter in this video wanted to see if he could repaired his old iphone in which his phone battery stop working and died. The person in this video was unable to repaired his old iphone because of how the phone was constructed. There certain equipment required to reassemble the phone back together. Which is why it's required for us to get it repair by a professional or buy a new phone completely. What i didn't know that i learned in this video that over 1.5 billion people spend money on smartphones every year. But during the great depression companies used obsolescence on purpose by shorten the span in there products to cause consumer to buy more of there product or replaced them. Apple was sued in 2017 for making phones slower after ios updates and has admitted to these alligation. But if i look into my generation having the most advanced iphone was the biggest flex. Having a new iphone was cool like a way to show off but at the same time the ads for iphones are super convincing by the way they present the product to the audience they are targeting which is the younger generation. The innoviation of technology is crazy that we have so much e-waste beause whenever a product get's old we usually replaced but there are alot of outdated devices we have in our homes. It's crazy how there over 54 million e-waste every year and it's not even properly recycled only 20 percent of it is actually recycled and this should be an issued. We either need producer and manufacturers to make produce last longer or we need to discover a way to properly dispose of old phone and computers. My action as a consumer is that i shouldn't buy the lastest technology unless it's really necessary In order to stop making e-waste crisis worst.

                                                         Worked Cited

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aYJPonRJd8
