LESSON ONE

Come up with three ideas about how the next 20 years might shape your chosen area.

With those three ideas – rate them from most to least significant/impactful on our world.

A simplistic question – do you foresee your chosen area to be more likely to improve or deteriorate over the next 20 years? Why?

Talk to at least three people about your chosen area. Choose a range – a sibling, a friend, a parent, a teacher… What are their thoughts about what the future holds for your chosen area? Write them down.

If you were going to explore these ideas in a written piece, what genre might you consider?

LESSON TWO

Have you watched any episodes of Black Mirror before? If yes, what are some common themes or elements you've noticed in the show?

No, I have not watched any episodes of Black Mirror before

What are some potential meanings or interpretations of the episode's title, "Hated in the Nation"? Anything significant about the word choice in the title?

Some of the potential meanings or interpretations of the episode’s title ‘Hated in the Nation’ are that the characters shown may be disliked people in the place they live because of a specific characteristic they have or opinion they represent.

Based on the title alone, what do you think this episode might be about? Any initial predictions?

Based on the title ‘Hated in the Nation’ the episode may be cantered around characters who are hated in their nation

How do you think online anonymity affects people's behavior and interactions on the internet?

Online anonymity affects people’s behaviour and interactions on the internet because it makes them feel as if they have power and control. It allows people to do whatever they want without feeling like someone is watching them.

What is the initial premise or setting of the episode "Hated in the Nation"?

A journalist who had an unpopular opinion suddenly and unexpectantly dies, the setting is a city.

Explain the role of social media and online platforms in the episode. How are people's actions influenced by these platforms?

Social media is used throughout the episode to show how people are hiding behind their online identity to express their opinions on a matter.

Describe the "ADIs" (Autonomous Drone Insects) and their purpose in the episode. How are they utilized, and what consequences do they bring?

The ADIs in the episode are bees that have begun killing people who are hated in the nation. The ACIs act as normal bees but are robots that are completely autonomous and make decisions for themselves.

Discuss the ethical dilemmas faced by the detectives as they investigate the deaths related to the #DeathTo hashtag. How do their choices impact the outcome?

If they decide to shut down the ADIs the whole ecosystem will stop growing which is ethically wrong for the environment, personally they need to do what they think is right and protect the people being targeted rather than let the bees kill them even if they are disliked. The dilemma she faces is spying on the population through the bees.

How does the episode explore themes of public shaming and online accountability? Discuss the consequences of these actions on both individuals and society as a whole.

The episode explores themes of public shaming and online accountability with the hashtag #DeathTo that contributes to the death of the people.

Reflect on the significance of the bees in the episode and their relationship to the ADIs. What message does this symbolism convey?

The bees are extremely significant to the story, killing the people that are hated. The message that this connection symbolises is that they have lost control.

Consider the role of technology in "Hated in the Nation." How does the episode depict the potential dangers or drawbacks of advancing technologies?

Technology’s role in “Hated in the Nation” is profoundly large and is what is killing the people. Social media starts the path towards the deaths then the bees finish them off.

Evaluate the ending of the episode. What message or moral lesson can be derived from the events that unfold?

The end of the lessons shows the public wanting answers and blue having faked her death to catch the real bad guy. Moral lessons that can be learned from the story are that trying to control other peoples lives shouldn’t be done and will always end in devastation.

Overall, what social commentary or critique do you think Charlie Brooker is making in this episode? How does it relate to real-world issues?

The episode ‘Hated in the Nation’ relates to the real world as it depicts public figures who are disliked and receive a lot of hate on social media and in public, however in the episode it goes much further than hate and results in the deaths of the public figures.

LESSON 1:

Rating

Idea

1

Robots will become more advanced, and scientists will discover more ways to utilise them in everyday life

2

Transport vehicles will become fully electric to help slow down global warming

3

AI continues to advance at a rapid pace

3) The likeliness of robots becoming more advanced and being utilised by more people is highly likely because they are a way for humans to make life easier

2025: Writing About the Future

Warm up: GEN Z represents people born late 1990’s to 2012, the people of gen z have allowed technology to expand across the world, inovation that has made life easier for humans.

The biggest/most significant difference between the time when my parents/grandparents is the effect of technology and the impact it has had on the whole world. From houses being lucky to having a TV that displayed black and white picture to children aged 12 having phones in their pockets. The advancements have also been made in health care that have benefited so many individuals to increase projected life span of the world.

My biggest fear for the future is how much technology will take over and when people will realise when advancements need to stop.

My biggest hope for the future is being able to start a family, and see the advancements of the world be for the good of it.

The government spying on society with robot bees being the main point. This also allowed me to visualise how technology further is implemented in everyday life.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the FUTURE?

A podcast is a series of digital audio files, typically presented in episodic format, which users can download or stream to listen to their convenience, much like to an on-demand radio show. A podcast is an audio (and sometimes video) medium for creative content, essentially a digital audio program.

Podcasts allow people to express their opinions, the better hosts are experts.

Scientists/people with degrees would be considered experts

There are two types of topics that can be discussed in a podcast, fiction and non-fiction.

Podcasts always have a purpose:

To explain

To express

To argue

To reflect

Conventions of a podcast:

Can vary in length, usually no longer than an hour

Are usually recorded in segments/seasons

Use short sound effects called 'stings' to separate segments

Often feature recognisable intro or section music

Language used:

How is the title interesting - what encourages people to click and listen

What language is compelling to the target audience listening to this podcast in the first minute

What audio conventions do we hear and not hear

The main takeaways:

When you are creating your podcast, you must have a specific audience and purpose to utilise. What makes yours compelling and interesting?

Not every podcast is the same, you need to adjust your conventions, and your language based on who your target audience is.

When you are creating your mentor text in podcast form, think carefully about the characters you are going to create and who you are targeting BEFORE you start writing.

HOW AI IS CHANGING WARFARE:

Context - Founded in 2017 to make technology for next generation national defence, they speak on how AI will affect war in the future, positive/negative.

Audience - Citizens of the country that they are providing technology or anyone that is interested in the topic of next generation defence

Purpose - To explain the purpose of their company and inform society what they are doing

How is the podcast constructed?

- The podcast is constructed by interviewing an expert on a topic then discussing the topic in a deep conversation. They use short clips as a way to engage the audience. They are sitting across from each other and speaking to each other.

Non-fiction:

It is 2078 and as I look back to my past my regrets include not spending enough time with my friends when I was younger, I remember every Friday night after I played football my friends would always come back to my place, and I regret not spending as much time with them as I should have as I grew up. I regret caring about every little detail rather than looking at life as a whole and enjoying living. I regret not taking as many risks in life as I should have, whenever I was asked to do something, I should've always said yes.

Short stories can be fiction or non-fiction

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE:

Exposition

Initial incident

Rising action - Tension or a problem arises

Climax - The main action/turning point of the story. The most significant part of the story where everything comes together.

Falling action

Resolution - The problem gets solved

CONVENTIONS OF A STORY:

The role of the plot and narrative are often used interchangeably. However, plot is used to describe the key events or moments in a text, while narrative is the result of all the decisions the creator made through vocabulary, text structures, language features and conventions and the presentation of ideas. In this way the narrative is the representation or manifestation of a story. Think of it like this: If you shuffle the order of a story's plot, you can create a new narrative of the same story.

NARRATIVE PERSPECTIVE:

Narrative perspective is the voice of the text: who is telling the story and how are they telling it. The point of view of the story is told from can influence the narrative because it affects the information the audience does or does not receive.

The are two main narrative perspectives:

First person narrative perspective

Limited: Reveals certain thoughts and feelings from specific characters

Omniscient: Reveals thoughts and feeling from most of the characters

A text can also be told in second person narration; however, this is extremely uncommon. This places the reader in the action, using second person pronoun 'you'

The choices a creator has go further than simply considering from whose perspective the story is told. Some narrative will tell the story from multiple perspectives, or may use an unreliable narrator (where the audience cannot necessarily trust the narrator's information or perspective)

CONVENTIONS OF A SHORT STORY:

Limited Number of Characters: Short stories generally feature a smaller cast of characters compared to novels. This limitation allows for more focused character development and exploration.

Focused Setting: Short stories tend to take place in a limited number of settings or a specific location. Authors use the setting to establish the mood, atmosphere, and context of the narrative.

Emphasis on theme: Despite their brevity, short stories often explore profound themes and messages. Writers aim to convey meaningful insights within the confines of a concise narrative

Engaging opening: Short stories typically begin with a compelling opening that immediately capture the reader's attention and sets the tone for the rest of the story

Conflict and tension: Like all narratives, short stories require conflict to drive the plot and maintain the reader's interest. Tension and suspense are often used to keep the story engaging

Distinctive style: Many short stories have a unique style or narrative voice that distinguishes them from other works by the same or different authors

The deep rooted misogyny ingrained into their societal norms suppresses the under-utilised and marginalised women in this society. The women don't have a voice to use in their society and the males feel it is their responsibility to exact this ancient tradition.

I was deeply surprised in the brutality of the ending in the way the towns people including the youngest children stone one of their own to death in order to fulfill tradition. Early on I knew the lottery was an ominous omen in the writing style and the anxiety it caused for the towns people. I knew someone was going to die but I thought it would be more humane.

Flash fiction - is a short fictional narrative, typically under 1500 words that still offers character and plot development.

In the Arborist there's a lot of use of imagery throughout the story. It is very descriptive such as when it says "That sun-baked-red-earth, eucalypt smell of the trees", "gunpowder earthiness of the dust" and "His skin is dry, like the coarse, peeling bark of the trees."

The literary devices allow us to picture what is being described in the short story. It allows ourselves to be immersed within the story and understand what is being told. The arborist uses plenty of imagery which makes us able to picture this new planet that the character is living on. We know is it a very isolated, inhospitable environment filled with various trees and the dry red dust that fills the air.
