Abuse of power is nothing new. This was a government that slaughtered civilians by the masses. 

in 1929 and the world recession that followed, the Chilean economy went into a crisis. There was widespread unemployment and social unrest. The government set up an emergency employment program and printed money to pay for it. Inflation rose, and so did the protests.
