The first people, of Celtic origin, built villages and gave similar orders to the Celts who occupied the rest of the British island .During the Roman expansion, they managed to repel the legions who had occupied the rest of the island. With the collapse of the Roman empire and the arrival of the barbarians, the Scots had to fight hard to defend their autonomy.Until the 18th century Scotland was an independent country. The English tried over many centuries to bring Scotland under their rule, and so war between the two countries was frequent. The two countries were eventually united when Queen Elizabeth I of England was succeeded in 1603 by James IV of Scotland who became King James I of England.
Many people in Scotland would like to be independent from England.
