A Beacon in the night by Morris Lurie

General view of the text/Plot:

Morris Lurie in his story presents a man whose life has challenges during the story.

Daniel meets Susan and they fall in love but notice that who brings the challenge is Susan bringing purpose and a new vision about life.

Main Characters: Yossel Shepps, the Father and the Son.

Themes:

Isolation and Loneliness:

The protagonist's job as a night watchman symbolizes his emotional and social isolation. He is physically alone in the dark, quiet environment, which amplifies his sense of detachment from others. His reflections reveal a deeper loneliness, stemming from his estrangement from his family and friends back in Australia.

Search for Meaning:

The story touches on existential themes, with the protagonist questioning the purpose of his life. The repetitive and seemingly meaningless task of watching over an empty construction site serves as a metaphor for his broader search for meaning in a world that feels indifferent.

Memory and Regret:

As the protagonist reminisces about his past, there is a strong sense of regret for the choices that have led him to this point. His memories are tinged with nostalgia and sorrow, as he reflects on relationships that have faded and opportunities that were lost.

Symbols:

The Night and Darkness:

The night represents the protagonist’s inner world—a place of darkness, uncertainty, and solitude. The darkness is both literal and metaphorical, reflecting the obscurity in his life’s purpose and direction.

The Beacon:

The title of the story, “A Beacon in the Night,” suggests the idea of a guiding light or hope amidst darkness. However, within the story, this beacon remains elusive, symbolizing the protagonist’s ongoing search for meaning and connection that seems just out of reach

Author’s style:

Explore different contexts of

characters.

Irony

Realism

General view/ plot

The author talks about Emma, a woman that in her vision was born without fear. She was confident and full of courage even if she did not think that way about herself. When Emma was about twenty years old, she faced death. She had accepted an invite by Bill to participate in a test to down the whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls in a big Rubber raft. There were big waves and the front of the raft tipping down into a trough dieper. The raft folded in half and they sank. Happily, even deeper Emma had a great Willpower and she could survive. This experience made her more determined to live. She did not live afflicted for life. It made her stronger. Now Emme lives optimistic and with good convictions.

Author’s Style

The author usually creates strong and brave characters, such as Emma, she is the main woman character in The Whirlpool Rapids. The demonstration of the strength that a woman has is always portrayed in Margaret's style. The end of the story is not usually happy and she does not close it, the author makes the reader find the conclusion on their own. For example, Emma's story ends informing that time has passed and she has partially changed but she believes that everything will collaborate with her, only with her conviction.

Religiosity is another factor present in the author's style, as it is shown as religion influences and dominates a person, thus, Emma's action of following risks was governed by the belief that she needed to prove that she was important and that she deserved it

The personality of the strong woman in Emma contrasts with society's view, the text mentions women without fear of domestic dangers and how fragile they become when they get pregnant, then, Margaret shows the woman without fear of facing what or who does not make her feel good, the author shows that even feeling fragile in a dangerous situation transforms Emma into a strong person.

Themes: The themes of Margaret Atwood's short story "Whirlpool rapids" are related to gender and identity, feminism, self-perception, resilience and the role of women in society.

Main characters:

Emma - She is a fearless person, she tries to prove for herself that she could do anything she wants. After the accident, she became more confident about herself. She believed in love, however she does not accept any love, for this reason, she is described as insensible.

Billy - He is a good person, he is strong, he is Emma's friend, he works for a travel agency. He does not have bad intentions with Emma.

Symbols

One of the important symbols in the text is the Whirlpool Rapids of Niagara Falls, because through it Emma had this near-death experience, which was like a test or a reaffirmation of her strength because even though she was in that place where so many people died or took their lives, she didn't give up and it didn't even cross her mind to give in to fatality. she went through it, and see her life in a different way, doing what she wanted to do, not letting the happiness of others more important over her own, realizing that if she had died, she would soon be forgotten. And it also represents how the author talks about women in her works and their strengths.

"Nor Was she ever tempted, after that, to give up anything – a man, an apartment, a job, even a vacation – in the mistaken conviction that by doing so she would be helping along the happiness of others.”

Thais, Héber, Paula, Leticia, Willian
