Sex/Gender System #3

The sex/gender system is the system used to indicate where a specific sex or gender is supposed to be and how a specific sex/gender is supposed to act. With the foundations of the binary male and female genders, most of this system indicate what a man or woman is "supposed" to do. In this image, the common bathroom signs are shown, these signs are on opposing doors indicating where each gender goes to the bathroom. This image is a prime example of the sex/gender system as it shows the division of the genders in a systematic way used throughout society. Where ever you go these signs, or similar signs, will be posted outside restrooms to indicate which one your gender should use.

Culture is a learned, common custom that a large group partakes in and is considered normal. Culture can surround places, holidays, people, and even specific age groups. This image is of me and my boyfriend carving pumpkins which is typical to do around Halloween time. Culture in this image is portrayed as the culture of Halloween. Within Halloween culture, many perform the cultural activity of carving pumpkins. Halloween is a well known holiday and within the culture of Halloween it is common to carve pumpkins typically in the form of faces. Many people follow this activity as throughout the years it has developed into the Halloween normal. Around Halloween time you can find these carved pumpkins by peoples doorsteps.

Material culture is the use of items and objects to satisfy the needs of culture. In this image we are attending a high end musical, the culture of these events is to dress nicely, therefor the articles of clothing used are considered material culture. While at this event we satisfied the needs of the culture for this event by wearing fancy clothes which in this case would be considered the material culture. Something to note in this image is clothes in general are a huge part in material culture, in most societies, excluding nudist culture, it is typical to wear clothes. The event we went to specifically called for fancier clothing, however all events within most cultures calls for clothing as it is the most common material culture.

Structure has two definitions, there is a physical and emotional structure of every culture. The emotional structure is the way a society functions, the rules of which people follow. This image represents the second definition of structure, the physical structure of which these rules take place. The overall definition however is a way to keep a society functional and organized. This image is of me in line at Disneyland waiting in the socially structured line. Lines are pertinent in our culture as they give people places to wait for tasks or items. As a culture waiting in line is a way that structures society to stay organized and functional.

The California minimum wage is $14 per hour however the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. This image is of me at my work, where I get paid minimum wage of $14 an hour. I receive a base of $14 an hour however I also get tips. The tips I receive help sustain my lifestyle as minimum wage typically can not.

Nurture #2

Nurture is the way the raising of a creature, typically a human, changes the way this creature behaves and develops into adulthood. Nurture is commonly conflicted with nature, with this case the nature of a pig is not to be domesticated and not to get too comfortable with humans. However with the way we raised her, we nurtured her to develop a trust for humans. In this image, my pig is comfy with me and my family surrounding her and petting her, however other pigs will not be as comfortable in these circumstances. We raised her since she was a piglet, we bottle fed her and raised her which was our way of nurturing her into her age. This is a prime example of nurture being a larger factor in development than nature as she is going against her nature based off the way we nurtured and raised her.

This Quest is an example of Feminism #1

This mural is an example of feminism as there are many women of every race and culture represented and the words "women of the resistance" underneath the women. Feminism is a prospective that acknowledges the patriarchy of the world and fights for the equality for women. This mural shows feminism as it is women of many cultures working hard, protesting to gain equality in the world and "resisting" patriarchy. 1. Who made/created this? The person who made this mural was most likely a woman who struggles day in and day out for quality in the world and wants to let other women know it is beautiful to be a woman. The way women are portrayed in this mural is of beauty and strength, meaning the person who made this believes women are beautiful and full of strength. 2. How does the meaning of this change depending on who is using or observing it? This meaning changes when someone who is a sexist looks upon this, people who do not believe in equality for women will see this mural as a rude treatment of the patriarchy and that women should not go against the patriarchy as that is how things work in todays society. However those who feel the same way as the artist will view this as women being strong and powerful.

This is an example of a gendered product #2

I believe this product is a pointlessly gendered product because it shows two little girls playing with this kitchen set. Though in the description it does say "toddler kitchen," there is no male representation in this image indicating the intended audience to be girls. Playing with a toy set such as this is not for a specific gender, however this brand is trying to relate it to little girls instead of all children. 1. What might be another way to think about this quest (or an aspect of it)? Another way to think about this quest, specifically gendered products, is a way to raise children into their "roles" in society. The way society has functioned for a long time has been that males and females have different tasks to grow into, women do the cooking and cleaning and men work and fight. This product, along with most other gendered products, is to help start these children on this path. Using the nurture aspect, these toys typically succeed in developing the children into their rules. 2. How do people interact with this? People interact with this product positively, as you can see in the rating this product has five stars. Many parents react positively to theses gendered products as they do not delve deep into the meaning and reasoning behind it. Most parents push their children towards the toys specifically for their kids gender. There are few outcasts who acknowledge that their children should be able to play with any toy they want, those parents do not hate on gendered products but instead ignore the gender bias and let their kids play with what they want.

Competition is when two or more people compete against one another to see who will win. Competition is typically seen in sporting events or video games. In this picture me and my boyfriend are on a ride at Disneyland, this is a ride where the two people in the cart shoot "astro blasters" at targets and whoever scores the highest wins. This is an example of competition as there is a winner, in this case I won with the higher score, and there is also a loser. Competitions also typically have an incentive to win, in most cases it is bragging rights, as was in this example.

A symbol is an image or physical thing that holds significant meaning relating to society as a whole or individuals, they can be seen all throughout society. Symbols typically have greater meaning behind them and can be understood differently depending on the circumstance and the person. This is an image of my step dads badge. In our society a badge is a symbol which indicates security and authority. This badge symbolizes the whole government to most Americans. Since symbols can be viewed differently depending on the person, there are some who view this badge as a symbol of destruction or lack of freedom.
