How are motifs and theme developed using character traits, pressure/conflict, and perspective? by Ms. Fletcher

Using what we have learned this week about character traits, conflict/pressure, and perspective evaluate how authors use these details to develop motifs and the theme. You may use "Way too Cool" or The Outsiders.

In chapter two of The Outsiders there is a motif of loyalty. When Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally are at the drive-in movies, Dally harasses the two girls sitting in front of them. After Dally leaves, Cherry asks Ponyboy, "What's a nice, smart kid like you running around with trash like that for?" Ponyboy responds, "I'm a grease, same as Dally. He's my buddy."
The author conveys that though Ponyboy was not supportive of Dally's behavior, he is loyal to the greasers. The reader gets a chance to understand Ponyboy's perspective, as well as the external pressures of his loyalty.

In"Way to Cool" the motif is that people keep giving Aston a sorry look . When Aston was walking towards the school and saw Nikkie and Nikkie asked if he needed the inhaler he said no because he thought that if his friends found out that he had asthma that he wouldn't be cool anymore so he threw the inhaler across the street knowing it was a bad idea . And at the end of the story he admitted that he did have asthma to the ambulance person. So the theme is to not care of what other people think about you .

In "way to cool" I would say the Theme is to not take Medical problems as a joke take it seriously also don't be ashamed of them. A Motif in the text "way to cool". “You have asthma?” she asked.

He glimpsed a hint of fear in her eyes and lied. “Naw. I mean I used to but I grew out of it." In this textual evidence Auston takes his Asthma lightly just to empress or to try to look cool. Giving him caring more about looking cool then his asthma he throws his inhaler and leaves it you see the problem is that Auston is ashamed of it and isn't taking his asthma seriously. More motifs are "he added as he wound up his arm like a major league baseball pitcher

and threw the inhaler as far as he could. It sailed over the tops of nearly leafless trees and landed in the streets" Is is the textual evidence for when he threw his inhaler also a motif for me saying he doesn't take his Asthma seriously is "“Do you have your inhaler, Aston?” his mom called out from the kitchen. The same question came from her lips every morning. Every morning." you see he doesn't take of note that him not having his inhaler is very important because when he said "every morning every morning" he's referring into his mom being annoying but yet he doesn't realize the importants

I'm half-scared of all nice girls, especially Socs. "Are you going to start in on us?" I shook my head, wide-eyed. "No."" Showing how he is nice to girls and not a dally type. It also says " Cherry sighed. "You two are too sweet to scare anyone. First of all, you didn't join in Dallas's dirty talk, and you made him leave us alone. " Showing how she thinks they are caring or Simps. It also says " "No," Cherry said slowly, looking at me carefully, "not innocent. You've seen too much to be innocent. Just not... dirty." " showing how she thinks they are not innocent just not dirty to girls. This is why I think ponyboy is loyal to girls.

in "way to cool" I think the theme is don't try to be someone else, throughout the story one motif that was around from the start was he wanted to look cool and didn't want anyone to know that he had asthma. and because of this his parents would tell him to always bring his inhaler with him but cause he wanted to look cool he didn't. from line 3 to 9 it stated "“Do you have your inhaler, Aston?” his mom called out from the

kitchen. The same question came from her lips every morning. Every

morning.

His grin vanished as he fingered the inhaler in his jacket pocket.

“Yeah, I got it,” he replied. He gave the screen door a gentle push,

stepped outside, and headed to school.

Rosa Parks Middle School was a mile from his house, and unless

someone gave him a ride, he walked.

“Take the bus,” his pops advised when it was cold.

Aston replied, “The bus ain’t cool.”

His pops would sigh. “You have asthma.”

Tell me something I don’t know,

Aston wanted to say." all cause he wanted to be cool he ignored the thing that could save his life, also from the same passage it also showed us that "He was still holding the inhaler when she reached

for his hand.

“You have asthma?” she asked.

He glimpsed a hint of fear in her eyes and lied. “Naw. I mean I

used to but I grew out of it.” How many times had people told him

that? That he would grow out of it? How much more did he have to

grow? Three inches or six? “Just an old inhaler I found in my pocket,”

he added as he wound up his arm like a major league baseball pitcher

and threw the inhaler as far as he could. It sailed over the tops of nearly

leafless trees and landed in the street.

A motif for "the ousiders" is brave. The reason I chose this is because, when Johnny stood up for Cherry when Dally was all up on her. There was that motif of bravness because Dally is very voilent so whoever would stand up to him would most likely get beat up. So it was very brave of Johnny to stand up for Cherry. My textual evidence is, "Leave her alone, Dally" "Huh?" Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelif. Johnny gulped and got pale, but he said, "you heard me. Leave her alone" The reason I chose this evidenceis because you can picture how scared Johnny was but he had to stand up for her. This evidence shows how Dally was being very impolite to Cherry, " He started to put his arm around her." I chose this evidence because before this Cherry had told him to back off multiple times but he kept on being all up on her. My last peice of evidence also shows how violent Darry is,"One time, in a dime store, a guy told him to move over at the candy counter, Dally had turned around and belted him so hard it knocked a tooth loose."This evidence shows how voilent he punched a complete stranger. This is why I chose brave as the motif.

In the text "way too cool" there is a motif of too cool.Aston is a very smart and good kid ,says the text. He just is different from when he is at school and at home. To me i believe he studies and works hard on his homework based on the text saying he gets a 98 percent on his algebra math test . But at school he might be smart but he sees himself as one of those jocky cool kids.Like the way he acted when his girlfriend asked if he had asthma . His response was a no and it wasn't ok . He decided to be instead to not suffer further damage to his lungs. The author makes it look like aston is a bad person for doing that but he isn't some of us get it . Not a lot of people like sharing stuff with other and it's sometimes understandable . The author shows aston's perspective in a complicated way but it still adds on to the story.

The Motif in "Way too cool" is That never play with your sickness to impress somebody. In the text it says that Aston threw his inhaler Just to impress a girl. When he threw his inhaler he knew that he needed it because of his sickness so the consequences that he got when he threw his inhaler was that his lungs started getting a tight. He knew that he needed his inhaler immediately and I am pretty sure he regrets throwing his inhaler. When he rushed into the office the inhaler that they gave him was empty. Then his lungs were even tighter he got so mad and started blaming his mother when she was not really the fault. When he remembered that he threw his inhaler he went running to get it and the principle had to start following him. when he went to the place where he threw his inhaler he found it. Now what I am thinking is that he will never lose his inhaler like that. Never play with your sickness to impress somebody.

The motif of "Way To Cool" is How Aston feels about people finding out he has Asthma. This is because in paragraph 14-15 it states '“You have asthma?” she asked. He glimpsed a hint of fear in her eyes and lied. “Naw. I mean I used to but I grew out of it.”' In this part of the Article it show us how Aston is scared of Nikki finding out that he has asthma and their relationship being ruined by it. Also in paragraph 65-68 it says "He slung his backpack over his shoulder and crept through the darkened room toward the back where the teacher was sitting. “I need to go to the office and get my inhaler,” Aston whispered. “You have asthma?” the teacher asked loudly. Aston could see the partially lit faces of some of his classmates as they turned and stared. Oh perfect, he thought as he felt his armor of cool beginning to vanish. “Yes,” he replied between coughs." this also shows his fear of people think of him as not cool.

This evidence supports my claim, "Aston said no and through his inhaler."

The theme for " Way To Cool " is to never be cool all the time just to impress someone. The reason I say this is because in the text it says that Aston's chest was getting tight and he had an inhaler but instead of using it he threw it away. The motif of the story " Way Too Cool " is that Aston doesn't want people to see who he really is. For example, when he gets good grades he just gets his paper and hides it and doesn't let people know he has asthma. The theme and the motif can develop Astons character trait in the story because he lies to everyone in the his school. For instance he lies that he has asthma and throws away his inhaler that can cause him to die. Also the conflict of the story that can be develop of the motif and theme is by Aston trying to be cool. This is a conflict that can be develop by the motif and theme because Aston is begin Way To Cool that can cause his family to worry about him and can put his own health/life in danger. The theme and motif can be develop in his perceptive and his mom's perceptive because his mother is asking if he is okay and if he is using the inhaler. Unlike Aston he gets annoyed when his mom asks him he is okay and if he is using the inhaler.

In the motif of "Way To Cool" written by Brenda Woods, is how Aston feels of the effect of how is it to have Asthma and how he feels about when people finds that he has Asthma. This happened when Aston's mom told him that does he has his inhaler and Aston was in a attitude and said "Yeah, I got it." So he got in the bus and a friend asked him "do you have asthma?" Well Aston looked to be nervous and didn't say anything so he ended up getting away with it. When he was at school he had a crush on a girl and he described her on how she looks like. Every single day he would daydream as people say that he's good at it. The theme of this story is Life is as serious as u trying get a girl friend. In paragraph 3 it states that when his mom said "Do you have your inhaler, Aston?" In paragraph 14 it states "do you have asthma?"This supports my motif. So basically life is way important than getting a girl friend or something. Since Aston has asthma he can easily get out of breath and not breath so he has to take that seriously.

The theme of "way to cool" is you should not care about what others think of you. i think this is the theme because Aston wants to be cool, he wants people to think of him as the cool kid. He wants to change things about him so other people could think that he was cool not lame. He throws away his inhaler because he thought his girlfriend and friends would think he was lame, but there is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to health. Then farther in the text when he is in math class his teacher came up to him and gave him his test paper. It was a high grade but he did not want his class mates to see how smart he was because he thought they would think of him as lame. Aston wants o know what others think of him but he changes a lot of thing about him or he wants to change things about him. he should not be ashamed of things that he thinks other people would make fun of him. this shows how the theme is, you should not care about what others think of you

<var>The motif of way to cool is popularity and the theme is you don't have to be cool if you have anything ( sickness, nerd, etc) but it makers of who you are that's what matters. In the passage popularity is something with anston because he wants to be cool but has a sickness. So in sentences 13 and 14 and 16 when nikkie grabs astons hand and then she said "You have asthma" , so then fear came to aston because since he is to cool he doesn't want her to know that he has asthma so then probably break up. So then the theme comes in because if we had a perspective on nikkie then maybe she could fell sorry for him and maybe love him more. In scentene 16 it says "You sure you should do that?" So this is how nikkie cares for him because if she didn't ask then she doesn't care if he has asthma. For the motif in sentence 42 is when the teacher gives him a test score ( 98) then he folds it up quickly so no one would know because for some reason ( even today sometime's) if you get bad grades it means that you are cool so like if your failing your so cool ( but let me tell you that is not going to help you future). </var>

This is because in the story Aston doesn't want nobody of his classmate or even his girlfriend to know he had asthma, because then he wouldn't be seen as a cool guy and might lose his girlfriend.

I think the theme of "Way to cool" is that you shouldn’t care of what people think or say. Ashton was embarrassed because he had asthma.Because of that he threw his inhaler. His character trait was that he was
not confident and wanted to fit in.This develops to the theme because later becomes more confident and realizes that being cool and fitting in is not a big deal.

I think the motif is that you shouldn't be embarrassed about what somebody thinks about you, because in the book it shows that he was really embarrassed about his asthma and thought he should keep it a secret so he wouldn't be made fun of. In my opinion I think he shouldn't care about what people say about him and just hang around the kids that dont care about his asthma and will still be friendly to him.

Plot, Setting, Character, Conflict, Symbol, and Point of View are the main elements which fiction writers use to develop a story and its Theme. Because literature is an art and not a science, it is impossible to specifically quantify any of these elements within any story or to guarantee that each will be present in any given story. Setting might be the most important element in one story and almost nonexistent in another. You may be familiar with plot already, but it is, nonetheless, important. It was what got us interested in reading in the first place. It was the carrot on the string that pulled us through a story as we wanted to see what would happen next. It is the order of events in a story.

That said, realize that plot is only sometimes the most important element of a good story; however, it is important to have a good understanding what the plot is. As much as I’ve always loved surprise endings, if the only thing a film or a story has is a great twist ending, it doesn’t have anything on a second look. and thats is PLOT and THEME
