What is Down Syndrome

Down syndrome was named for the doctor, John Langdon Down, who in 1866 clearly named the specific set of traits associated with trisomy 21.
Down syndrome and Trisonomy 21 are the same diagnosis.
Down syndrome occurs when there is a extra genetic material found on the 21st chromosome . This can happen on all copies of the 21st chromosome or only some copies. This extra chromosome changes the orderly development of the body and brain. Down syndrome is not a disease, nor is it contagious. Its most common forms usually do not occur more than once in a family. Children who have Down syndrome are very much the same as other children. They have the same moods and emotions, and they like to learn new things, to play and enjoy life.

Raising a child with Down Syndrome has its uniques joys and challenges. Learning that your baby has Down Syndrome is not an easy thing for anyone to face, and it’s very common to experience a roller coaster of emotions. It’s true my daughter has some developmental delays. And she receives a bevy of therapies through Early Intervention to help keep her on track. But she’s also wonderful. She has a twinkle in her eye and an infectious grin that makes even the most miserable looking people smile when she stares them down.I do think she is more special than other children, but it’s not because she’s has Down Syndrome. My daughter it’s perfect and nothing should label her she’s smart, bright and beautiful.
