Starting in the '60s, both boy bands and girl groups became very popular. Artists such as The Supremes, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys are great examples of how popular these bands were able to become. In addition, the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War were occurring, changing the way music was written. Instead of writing about happy, upbeat subjects, the artists began to write to influence their listeners. The Rights movement also allowed for soul stars, like Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, to rise to fame. In 1969, Woodstock became one of the largest rock festivals of time. More than 450,000 people attended, most of them "hippies". The '60s finished with Janis Joplin, Brian Jones (Rolling Stones), and Jimi Hendrix sadly all dying of drug overdoses.

This era was a time of rap, hip-hop, pop, and alternative music to come to power. The early years were filled with hip-hop, techno, and rap singers such as Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. The grunge and alternative rock period happened from about 1992 to 1995. Artists like Kurt Cobain and Nirvana sang about rebellion and a meaningless life. By late 1995, though, the grunge age was over, and the happy rock movement came, along with Hootie and the Blowfish and The Spice Girls. This movement gave way to the bubblegum pop time in the late '90s when Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, and N'Sync ruled the music world.

In the last 15 years, the hip-hop and rap have taken over the music even more than they did in the '90s. Kanye West, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, and Wiz Khalifa are some to name a few from the very large pool of choices. Even with this takeover, the mainstream pop has still stayed alive with artists like One Direction, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, and Ariana Grande. The current sensation in the music world is one-hit wonders. There are so many of these I couldn't even count. Some of the most recent hits are "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, "Am I Wrong" by Nico and Vinz, and "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon.
