The movie is set in post civil war Spain during Francisco Franco's fascist dictatorship. It was a rough and oppressive time in Spain's history and required unquestioning loyalty.

THE MORAL

Just as Ophelia did not blindly follow the Faun, the lesson is that blind allegiance is never a good idea. The only way she got to her kingdom was by thinking for herself, and the clearly evil side of this tale was caused by that unquestioning nature of the fascists.
