You might have not heard but, unlike America, there are places in the world that don’t support the same things as we do. For example, in Russia LGBT people don’t have the same rights as the people in America do. Many LGBT people and others who support them say that Russia is definitely not a safe place for them. This is because in Russia people are not aloud to have nontraditional relationships or marriages. Even churches in Russia say that same-sex relationship should be “completely eliminated.” In 2013 Vladimir Putin made a law called “gay propaganda”, this made it horrible and illegal to encourage LGBT rights. It also bands same-sex relationships. As a result, attitudes are also very rude and homophobic towards LGBT people.

Dear Diary,
Today I saw another couple just like me! She was holding hands with another woman like Alice and I like to do all the time. All of a sudden these police officers came out of no where and kick, punch, and slap these poor women to the ground. Everyone around them was cheering the police officers on like it was actually entertaining. I just stood there on the other side of the street in the background as they were taken away. Blood dripping down their faces, it was unbearable to see but I couldn’t look away. They just kept cheering and cheering “Chechnya! Chechnya!”, even the thought of that place made me wanna puke. Torturing and possibly killing LGBT people for what? Just being themselves? I wonder sometimes why? Why are people like this? But, that's the way it is here. If you're not “normal” than your “dangerous” to everyone and everything around you. I just hope my fate won’t come to that…..

How has the problem affected the community directly

This is definitely something everyone should recognize because it affects us all as a community. “Adults can safely mock us, rape us, and undermine us”, George L. There are also numbers of homophobic attacks towards LGBT people and supporters. They are just as much as people as we are. So why should we treat them any differently? Gay men are taken from their homes in Russia and taken to an asylum while tortured and detained. In January, Pavel Stotsko and Yevgeny Voitsckhocky had to flee Russia after getting death threats because they got married. As you can see the gay propaganda is harming youth! Not just in Russia but many countries that hate same-sex relationships end up putting LGBT people in jail, torturing them, or killing them.

Why should the rest of the world be concerned about this issue?

The rest of the world should be concerned about this because these same people are being treated in Russia. Bloodletting, painful pressure on parts of the body, electric shocks into sensitive parts of the body as well. One of the places they are taken is called Chechnya to be “treated” and even more horrible things. The world should know that men, women, and children are being abused for something they can’t help! In Russia , August 2017, there was a guy named Amir who was beaten by his brother for being on a video call with another guy because Amir was gay. After he beat Amir he took his phone and said he would kill Amir if he ever confirmed and said out load that he was gay. It seems as part of this world is falling apart and crippling to dust. All because other people are scared of something they don’t understand. They don’t even take the time to try and understand it, they just jump to the conclusion that anything and everything that is different than them is wrong and dangerous. People say that they aren't seeing many positive changes about what is being done to these innocent people. As a result, these innocent people are constantly in danger and at the risk of other people they love that support them.

What is currently being done to address this problem?

Not much is currently being done to address this issue. But, that’s where we can help the people who have to go through torturing, treating, hurting, abusing…. whatever you want to call it that is making them suffer. Thankfully there are a couple of programs that help LGBT prisoners flee from places like Russia for example. In 2011, the ALL Out program was founded, this is a program that helps people who in Russia flee from the area. It provides the LGBT captives in Chechnya and other nearby asylums with shelter and legal help. Another thing is the pride flag that we can proudly hold high in the sky here in America but, in Russia, the police officers will arrest or kill you for trying to support LGBT and their rights. Even if your just holding the flag, it is a sign of crime so the Russian police will come and knock down the wall you’ve made to help these strangers lives. However, because of these consequences these brave people still fight because in their hearts they know it’s the right thing to do. And I hope you can be one of those people.
