Reading ''Das Weiße Rose''

01/03/2017, 1 hour
I read about 30 pages of the book '"Das Weiße Rose" (Easy Readers), taken from the University's library. The book explains the context in which the Nazi resistance organization "Weiße Rose" was created, a topic which I found interesting.
However, it was fairly difficult to read, and I had to look many of the words in the dictionary, which interrupted my reading flow. Next time, I'll try to get an easier book.
I particularly found the activity useful to familiarize myself with the use of connectors, and how to properly thread sentences together to form coherent paragraphs.

5/03/2017, 40 min
I watched two podcasts by the Youtube Channel PCWelt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmI0UX59-pM and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxP7ZuwQBo8).
Even though there were no subtitles, I could pick up some simple words such as numbers, months, and some adjectives such as "neu", "teuer" or "innovativ", and some tech related words such as "Wasserkühlen" or ''Bildfrequenz"'. Also I previously knew about some of the topics covered which helped me better grasp what they were talking about.
However, still I could not understand many of the sentences, which implies that I should do more listening.
Nonetheless, I fell that this kind of activities help me with my pronunciation, because it familiarizes me with German sounds.

25/03/2017, 45 min
I revised the correction of the Essential Homework that I submitted on week 6. Most of my errors were related to properly assigning terminations to adjectives and using the correct prepositions for some verbs such as "machen", "kommen", "bleiben". Also I sometimes do not distinguish properly between dative and akkusative.
First, I tried to understand my errors. Afterwards, I revised the relevant section in the Workbook and the PDF in MOLE about determinant+adjective terminations as well as dative vs accusative. To practice the use of prepositions, I used the one of the provided Quizlets.

Watch two episodes of "Heidi"

01/04/2017, 45 min
I watched the episode 10 ("Der Besuch") and episode 11 ("Der Schneesturm") of the cartoon "Heidi" with German subtitles. I found the voices easy to understand and the plot not too complicated, and therefore I was able to understand most of what was happening, even though I could not recognize many of the words.
Overall I am going to keep watching more episodes because it is not an exhaustive task at all (like reading can be) and allows me to improve my listening skills which I fell like they are my weakest point.

05/04/2017, 1 hour
I felt like this book was more appropriate for my level than ''Das Weiße Rose'' because I did not have to be constantly looking at a dictionary. Rather, I just underlined the words that I did not know, but I was able to keep reading and understand the plot through its context. Afterwards, I went back and looked those words on the dictionary. The book also had some exercises at the end to reflect on the understanding of the book, which I got mostly right.
While reading the book I kept a close eye at sentence structures, identifying the position of each element of the sentence. It became very evident to me that the time clauses go mostly first and the direct object usually at the end.

12/04/2017, 30 min
I am planning on buying a new CPU for my computer, and I decided to look for reviews for some models in very reputable German webpage (https://www.computerbase.de/thema/ryzen/). I read 5 articles which highlighted different benchmarks, comparisons and recommendations. I was impressed because I managed to get a general ideal with only some translation needed.
I liked this activity because it allowed me to gain vocabulary specific to a field I am particularly interested with. From grammar standpoint, I learned how to make comparisons with "als" and "-ste".

Online exercises - Prepositions and past conjugation

09/05/2017, 45 min
I decided to review the use of prepositions because I feel like I struggle with them the most. I found on line exercises at https://german.net/exercises/prepositions/, which were of my level. To practice for the final exam, I decided to also do exercises of the past perfect (https://german.net/exercises/tenses/perfect/, http://germansteps.com/perfect/). I did not remember some of the very irregular conjugations, like bedankt, but overall I think I have properly understood the usage of past perfect.

Reading der Spiegel

12/05/2017, 45 min
I read a news article on der Spiegel (http://www.spiegel.de/) about the traditional far right in Spain. It was interesting to read about my country from an outsider perspective. I also read another article about Donald Trump tweeting ex-FBI director Comey and a worldwide cyberattack. The vocabulary was very advanced and I had to translate many words, mostly nouns. I could however distinguish quite a lot verbs and connectors. Also the use of the past tense was very prevalent, which was good given that I recently studied it. I think I should keep reading this kind of complex tests until I reach a point were I can get a general idea of the article without the use of a dictionary.
