When Rainsford decides to say that, a switch flips in his mind and he now has the motivation to show he is not one to be messed with. After fighting with the conflict, he has finally learned the way of the hunt and will go to great lengths just to beat the game. The quote is very straightforward and it gives simple context to describe the character. That quote proves that Rainsford is the protagonist because he is letting Zaroff know that his situation and that he is not afraid. Rainsford had no idea who he was or what he was capable of, so he did not show fear. Usually, the protagonist is always in a situation where they will be in danger without knowing it yet. Also, protagonists in most stories are resilient and this proves he is telling them who he is without fear.
