Students are expected to decide on a VET (VDSS) course before they choose their Senior School Certificate & subjects as 2025 VET(VDSS) course applications open in August of 2024. They must discuss with their families whether VET(VDSS) is a suitable option for them and look for a course at an institution that is easily accessible. Once you have decided to do a VET (VDSS) course and return to VSV in 2025, you will then need to submit a VET(VDSS) EOI to VSV.

It provides students with the valuable opportunity to:

• develop employability skills

• explore possible career options

• understand employer expectations, and

• increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence.

Details what work experience involves, when it can be completed, how parents can help, expectations of student during the work placement, payment, and employer expectations.

• integrate practical on-the-job experience and learning in workplaces with nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) undertaken as part of the VCE, the VCE Vocational Major or the Victorian Pathways Certificate

• undertake work placement to complement an applied learning program as part of the VCE Vocational Major or the Victorian Pathways Certificate

• demonstrate the practical application of work-related skills as part of VCE Industry and Enterprise.

Structured workplace learning provides the opportunity for:

• enhanced skill development

• practical application of industry knowledge

• assessment of units of competency

• achievement of some learning outcomes

• enhanced employment opportunities.

SBATs combine part-time employment with training toward a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification. Students can receive credit for their SBAT towards the VCE, VCE Vocational Major or Victorian Pathways Certificate.

The SBAT student, their parent and employer sign a training contract, and the student completes a training plan with a registered training organisation.

VSV Principal must approve the SBAT, so the student can attend work and training during the school week.

Before their apprenticeship or traineeship formally begins, the student completes a work trial to make sure they, their parents, their school and the employer are confident the placement is suitable.

The student, their parent and employer sign a training contract, and the student completes a training plan with a registered training organisation.

Depending on employer and student needs, Head Start can support students to increase their hours of paid employment as they progress through their studies. For example, a student might have paid employment for:

• one day per week in year 10

• 2 days per week in year 11

• 2-3 days per week in year 12.

SBAT students can work at their place of employment on weekends and in the school holidays. Depending on the stage of their training plan, they can transition into a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship when they leave school. Year 12 can be done over 2 years if needed.

Head Start also supports students in their first year after leaving school, to help make their transition into full-time training and employment an easier process.

Attending institution open days gives students the opportunity to learn how an institution works, where it is, what opportunities are available and how you feel about the environment, people and courses.
