Runaway slaves often traveled north to try and obtain their freedom. The Underground Railroad led by Harriet Tubman helped many slaves escape to better areas. It was of course not a literal railroad but rather a pathway of stations and hideouts where slaves could go on their way to find freedom. Many people, black and white helped more than 100,00 slaves gain freedom, and although it was difficult, when safety was reached, it was well worth it for the slaves to be out of the hands of cruel masters.

For a while there were no laws to deal with runaway slaves, but after it became more habitual for slaves to flee, the government had to do something about it. In 1850, the Fugitive Slaves Acts were passed that both threatened the the slaves to be sent back to the south but also those who helped the slaves along the way. Part of the Fugitive Slave Acts were that any judge could immediately sentence a man that was accused of being a runaway slave back to his master without a jury trial. This was not helpful for slaves who were trying to escape. The Fugitive Slave Acts were also detrimental to northers because they were called to bring any runaway slaves in to be sent back to the south. This went against many of the northers anti-slavery views and caused them to act against their nature

Slavery was awful to begin with. Although there were different levels of slavery all of it was brutal and dehumanizing. However, even thought slavery was terrible, it was nothing compared to the life a slave who had runaway and was then returned to the south. Any small privileges that a slave might have had before he/she ran away were all revoked the moment they were returned to their master. Extra beatings would occur to ensure that the slaves would not try to escape again, and because of the lack of trust (not that there was much to begin with) returned slaves would be under the watchful eye of many at all times. Also, when returned it is simply a reminder that no one thinks they deserve freedom or the right to live without bondage.

Why did slaves run away?

Why was all the misery and terrifying moments running as fast as you could away from the south so important to so many slaves? Well first of all, whatever slaves went through on their way to freedom, it was so much worse in captivity on a farm. The pain and brutality of slavery was worse than anything ever before. Also, many families were split up when slaves were sold, so the thought of maybe seeing a mother or son again was well worth the agony along the path to the North. Many slaves also wanted the chance to be their own person. To show off their talent and to make their own money and not get beaten when they showed any kind of humanity. They wanted to have a proper home and get an education. The pros outweighed the cons greatly in this scenario due to the fact that slavery was literally hell on earth.
