<var> FRANKENSTEIN</var>
There are probably more films of this sad and frightening story than of any other story in the world. Why do so many people like it? Is it because Frankenstein's monster is something we all know, something from our worst dreams? It is an old story, and a new story - 'old' because it was written more than 180 years ago; 'new' because Frankenstein's problem is the same problem that scientists have today. Science gives us many wonderful discoveries - machines, computers, weapons - but how do we use these things? Will they give us a better life, or will they destroy us in the end? Victor Frankenstein creates a new man, bigger and stronger than any other man - a huge and frightening monster. But even monsters need love, and when his creator turns away from him, the monster begins to destroy everything that Frankenstein loves ...

Mary Shelley (1797-1851) was the daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, both writers and famous people of that time. When Mary was sixteen, she ran away to Europe with the famous English poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and married him two years later, after his wife's death. For four years they lived in Italy, until Shelley's death in 1822, when Mary returned to England with their son Percy. She wrote many books during her life, but today she is remembered only for her first novel, Frankenstein. The idea for this famous story came to her when she and her husband were staying with Lord Byron, another well-known English poet, at his villa near Lake Geneva. One stormy night Byron suggested that everyone should write a ghost story. At first Mary did not have any ideas, but later she had a dream in which a monster appeared, and so Frankenstein was born. When she wrote the novel, she was only nineteen and was expecting a baby. Two of her children had already died young, and we can see in this novel her fears and worries about pregnancy, childbirth, and the way children develop in later life. Frankenstein is often called the first science-fiction story, and many films have been made of it. Most of them show a 'mad' scientist and an 'evil' monster, as often happens in horror films (for example, the dinosaurs in the film Jurassic Park). A recent film (Kenneth Branagh, 1994) is closer to Mary Shelley's story: it shows how a scientist has to make difficult choices, and that the monster is just sad and lonely, not evil at all.

There are probably more films of this sad and
frightening story than of any other story in the world.
Why do so many people like it? Is it because
Frankenstein's monster is something we all know,
something from our worst dreams?
It is an old story, and a new story - 'old' because it was
written more than 180 years ago; 'new' because
Frankenstein's problem is the same problem that
scientists have today. Science gives us many wonderful
discoveries - machines, computers, weapons - but how
do we use these things? Will they give us a better life, or
will they destroy us in the end?
Victor Frankenstein creates a new man, bigger and
stronger than any other man - a huge and frightening
monster. But even monsters need love, and when his
creator turns away from him, the monster begins to
destroy everything that Frankenstein loves ...

Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), was the daughter of the radical philosopher William Godwin, who described her as ‘singularly bold, somewhat imperious, and active of mind’. Her mother, who died days after her birth, was the famous defender of women’s rights, Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary grew up with five semi-related siblings in Godwin’s unconventional but intellectually electric household.

At the age of 16, Mary eloped to Italy with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who praised ‘the irresistible wildness & sublimity of her feelings’. Each encouraged the other’s writing, and they married in 1816 after the suicide of Shelley’s wife. They had several children, of whom only one survived.

A ghost-writing contest on a stormy June night in 1816 inspired Frankenstein, often called the first true work of science-fiction. Superficially a Gothic novel, and influenced by the experiments of Luigi Galvani, it was concerned with the destructive nature of power when allied to wealth. It was an instant wonder, and spawned a mythology all its own that endures to this day.

After Percy Shelley’s death in 1822, she returned to London and pursued a very successful writing career as a novelist, biographer and travel writer. She also edited and promoted her husband’s poems and other writings.

Mary Shelley was born on 30 August 1797. She was born as Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. She was born in London. She was born to political philosopher William Goodwin. Her mother Mary Wollstonecraft was a renowned Feminist. Mary Shelley’s mother died 10 days after her birth. Her father married William Clairmont. She grew up with older half-sister Fanny Imlay and step-siblings Charles and Claire Clairmont. Mary Shelley received very little formal education. She was tutored by her father.

In 1812 her father sent her to Scotland. In 1814 Percy Bysshe Shelley was frequently visiting her father’s home. He had become estranged from his first wife. Percy Bysshe Shelley also became an apprentice to her father. Mary Shelley and P.B Shelley started a romantic relationship soon. They secretly met each other and fell in love. William Goodwin didn’t allow for this. Mary Shelley left for France. She with her stepsister Claire went to France with Percy Bysshe Shelley. William Goodwin disowned Mary Shelley. After that, they went to Switzerland. Lord Byron asked Mary Shelley and P. B. Shelley to write small ghost stories for amusement. Unable to write a ghost story Mary Shelley ended up creating Frankenstein. She published her book Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus in 1918. On their return to England, they were informed of Harriet Shelley’s suicide. In 1822 Percy Shelley died at sea.

Mary Shelley was a philosopher herself. She believed in Free Love. Free Love is sort of an Open Relationship. She was in her teens when she wrote the book that is now a classic.

Biography

Mary Shelley was born on 30 August 1797 in London. She was the second daughter in her family. Her parents were Mary Wollstonecraft, a feminist, and William Godwin, a philosopher. Her mother died in childbirth. Her father was quick to marry again. Mary got a great education, something most girls did not have at the time.

During May of 1816, Mary and her future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, travelled to Lake Geneva to spend summer near the famous poet Lord Byron. In terms of English literature, it was a great summer. Percy began work on "Hymn To Intellectual Beauty" and "Mont Blanc". At the same time, Mary was inspired to write her classic work.

One evening, the group of young writers decided to have a contest telling horror stories. Another guest, Dr John Polidori, came up with The Vampyre, later a strong influence on Bram Stoker's Dracula. Other guests told scary stories, but Mary could not think of one. But that night, she dreamt of the story she had wanted to tell. She wrote it down, and in time, her story would be published as Frankenstein, and it became more successful than any of the other writings produced that summer.

Mary had a number of different sources for her work; one was the Promethean myth from Ovid. The influence of John Milton's Paradise Lost (the book the 'monster' finds in the cabin) is also clearly seen in the novel. Also, both Shelleys had read William Beckford's Vathek.

Mary and Percy were both vegetarians, and strong advocates for animal rights. One can see references to vegetarianism in her writing. For example, in her novel Frankenstein, the 'monster' was a vegetarian.

Returning to England in September of 1816, Mary and Shelley were stunned by two family suicides in quick succession. First, in November, Mary's older half-sister, Fanny Imlay, left the Godwin home and took her own life at a distant inn. Only weeks later, Shelley's first wife drowned herself in London's Hyde Park. Discarded and pregnant, she had not welcomed Shelley's invitation to join Mary and himself in their new household.

Shortly after Harriet's death, Shelley and Mary were married, now with Godwin's blessing. Their attempts to gain custody of Shelley's two children by Harriet failed, but their writing careers enjoyed more success when, in the spring of 1817, Mary finished Frankenstein.

Mary had two sons and a daughter. The daughter died in infancy and the elder son when he was two.

Mary Shelley died of brain cancer on February 1, 1851 in London, and was buried at St. Peter's Churchyard in Bournemouth, in the English county of Dorset

Four films have shown Mary Shelley, and the basic idea of the Frankenstein story in 1816: Gothic directed by Ken Russell (1986), Haunted Summer directed by Ivan Passer (1988) , Remando al viento (English title: Rowing with the Wind) directed by Gonzalo Suárez (1988) and Mary Shelly directed by Haifaa al-Mansour (2017)

The only purpose of art is not to arouse sense of pleasure in people, but also to create awareness.

Sometimes we look at a table, try to understand what they want to say.It creates a strange feeling inside us, burkar sometimes. The difference between looking and seeing is exactly what we see here.We need much more to understand the artist, to look at his work.

MARY SHELLEY
English writer Mary Shelley is best known for her horror novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus (1818). She was married to poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Synopsis

Mary Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, in London, England. She married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1816. Two years later, she published her most famous novel, Frankenstein. She wrote several other books, including Valperga (1823), The Last Man (1826), the autobiographical Lodore (1835) and the posthumously published Mathilde. Shelley died of brain cancer on February 1, 1851, in London, England.

Early Life

Writer Mary Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin on August 30, 1797, in London, England. She was the daughter of philosopher and political writer William Godwin and famed feminist Mary Wollstonecraft—the author of The Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). Sadly for Shelley, she never really knew her mother who died shortly after her birth. Her father William Godwin was left to care for Shelley and her older half-sister Fanny Imlay. Imlay was Wollstonecraft's daughter from an affair she had with a soldier.

The family dynamics soon changed with Godwin's marriage to Mary Jane Clairmont in 1801. Clairmont brought her own two children into the union, and she and Godwin later had a son together. Shelley never got along with her stepmother. Her stepmother decided that her stepsister Jane (later Claire) should be sent away to school, but she saw no need to educate Shelley.

The Godwin household had a number of distinguished guests during Shelley's childhood, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. While she didn't have a formal education, she did make great use of her father's extensive library. Shelley could often be found reading, sometimes by her mother's grave. She also liked to daydream, escaping from her often challenging home life into her imagination.

Shelley also found a creative outlet in writing. According to The Life and Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft, she once explained that "As a child, I scribbled; and my favourite pastime, during the hours given me for recreation, was to 'write stories.'" She published her first poem, "Mounseer Nongtongpaw," in 1807, through her father's company.
