Today, the literature on AI in education suggests that it has both positive and negative impacts, with many sources questioning its role in shaping the future of the education system, and our world.

Some sources emphasize AI’s positive role in personalizing learning while others bring up concerns about academic integrity and ethical challenges. But overall, the major recurring themes in my research include AI’s ability to enhance student engagement, support teachers through automated grading, better class structure, and improving accessibility for all types of students. However, some sources warn that as more people become reliant on AI in their everyday life, it could lead to reduced human interaction and development of critical thinking skills (Chaushi, 2024, p. 55-57). Additionally, ethical concerns such as biased algorithms and data privacy issues remain a major topic of debate (Nguyen, 2023, p. 4230).

AI’s role in education is still changing, and has arguably just begun, and ongoing research is crucial in determining how to balance the educational benefits it brings with potential risks it poses. What I’ve learned from the sources I’ve researched will shape my argument, helping me evaluate AI’s effectiveness in education while considering the valid negative concerns equally. Understanding these dynamics is essential for educators and higher-ups to make informed decisions about integrating AI into the educational system.

One of the main arguments in favor of AI in education today is its ability to provide personalized learning experiences for students who all learn best with different ways and paces. AI powered applications, such as tutoring systems, adapt to individual students needs, allowing them to learn at their own pace (Ahmad, 2022, p. 4). These systems improve engagement and learning efficiency by offering real-time feedback and in depth directions for any problem a student is struggling with. Additionally, AI can identify struggling students early, and allow them to get up to speed in the class by acting as sort of a virtual teacher (Chaushi, 2024, p. 53). Despite these advantages, some experts warn that excessive reliance on AI could remove important human interaction and hinder social learning skills while also introducing data privacy concerns.

Another significant benefit of AI is its ability to automate grading and assessments, reducing some time that teachers have to spend grading, giving them more time for improving other aspects of the class. AI tools can analyze large amounts of student data quickly, providing insights for the students into learning progress and areas that require improvement based on guidelines the teacher gives (Mao, 2024, p. 60). Automated grading ensures consistency and unbiased results, minimizing human error that is basically inevitable. However, critics argue that these AI algorithms are not foolproof and may produce inaccurate or unfair assessments (Akgun, 2021, p. 434). There is also concern that such automation could diminish the role of teachers, potentially replacing human educators with AI alternatives. This is unfortunately the case for a lot of jobs, as AI continues to prove to be good at almost everything.

Despite its potential, AI in education creates several ethical challenges and risks that need to be considered. Nguyen (2023, p. 4235) highlights concerns about potentially biased algorithms that may exhibit educational inequalities. Additionally, the use of AI raises significant data privacy concerns, as students personal information is collected and analyzed by the AI models, without regulation. Wardat (2024, p. 73) writes that AI tools can sometimes convincingly produce misleading or incorrect information, negatively impacting students' learning outcomes, particularly when AI-generated content doesn't have the proper context for understanding the task at hand. These concerns suggest that AI should complement, rather than replace, traditional teaching methods until further advancements are made to fully address all concerns by big organizations.

While ethical concerns regarding AI in education are reasonable to have for a new technology, they do not outweigh its potential benefits, especially as it continues to advance. AI should be viewed as an assistive tool rather than a replacement for human educators. Proper implementation of AI in schools, combined with more concise AI information, can lessen risks associated with potential bias and data security (Foltynek, 2023, p. 3). By integrating AI responsibly, educational organizations such as high schools and universities can take advantage of its strengths while preserving the essential fundamentals of teaching, such as human connection and critical thinking development.

AI is undoubtably going to make an impact on the education system in the US, it is just a question of how fast it will happen. Some people compare it to the introduction of the calculator, when people were wary of using it because it was like magic at the time. However, concerns regarding ethical implications, data security, and the risk of overreliance on technology make it differ from the calculator. The key to successfully integrating AI into education lies in balancing its advantages with necessary safety measures and limitations. Rather than replacing educators and taking away their jobs, AI should assist them, allowing them to help students learn faster and with a better understanding, helping our world become a better place. Ongoing research and proper use will be crucial in ensuring that AI acts as an assistant for the improvement of the educational system in colleges.

Artificial Intelligence is quickly transforming many aspects of the world, including education. In the United States, AI is being increasingly integrated into college and high school classrooms whether it be by the school itself or the students taking advantage of it. While AI has only been around for a couple years now, it has already revolutionized how students learn and how teachers and schools run their classrooms. From more personalized learning experiences to automated college admissions, AI offers many benefits, but it also presents some serious challenges such as ethical concerns and academic integrity issues with kids becoming too reliant on the technology.
