1. Explain Isla's attitude towards Hobart. Refer to symbolism and language choices in your response.
 
All in all she does not really like Hobart. she has had good experiences here but there is nothing particularly interesting and cool there. " the magic was gone. we drove to school the next morning in our grey uniforms that offer no warmth. the title snow day represents a happy day in an otherwise dull and dark world. the white of the snow in this chapter represents the opposite of darkness. the thing she is so scared of.
Isla longs for her lost innocennce and her attitude towards the town infers that Hobart is a source of grief for her.

2.  There is a distinct change in mood toward the end of this chapter. Discuss how Parrett achieves this change. 

There is a sense of elation and joy -"school was cancelled. The tonal shift takes place with the paragrap opening "By that night it was slush."

Parrett has written sentences which are very short to sentences of much greater lengths. The shortness of a sentence like "About how he was dead" and "the day Tom Balinski died" creates a short blunt statement which cuts through to the reader. This creates a much more somber and sad.
