One experience that I find to be an accomplishment was having the opportunity in my field placement to read a few books out loud to a small group of students. Personally, I find this to be an accomplishment because this is something that I had never done before with more than one child. Even though an experience such as this one is a small accomplishment, these kinds of opportunities create more excitement within myself to become a future educator.

Another accomplishment within my field placement was when I had the opportunity to work with a student one on one. The students were working on a story writing activity and there is a particular student that needs writing supports. I had the opportunity to work with the student one on one and help him sound out words in order to complete the assignment. This was an accomplishment because the student was able to complete a well written story, while I assisted in sounding out words so there were minimal spelling errors.

RTI

Recently in class, we learned about what response to intervention (RTI) is, the essential components, and the multi-level prevention system that goes along with RTI. This concept that was learned in class is something that my field placement's school does every single day. When it is time for RTI, the students split up into various groups and work on different activities with a teacher. For example, the general education teacher in my placement has a small group of students that she does different activities with. She does everything from playing a board game with the students that involves learning about the main idea of a text to teaching them the difference between can't and can not.

During the time spent at my field placement, I have seen my student-based educator and the general education teacher in the classroom use Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids is a website that has many different programs that can be used within the classroom; my teachers focus on the reading A-Z program. Seeing this program used in the classroom have allowed me to use it as a presentation topic in Education 204, as well as learning more about the website so it can possibly be used in my own future class.

Something that I have been practicing throughout my time spent in my field placement is creating connections with as many students as I can. As we discussed in class, there are students that are very easy to connect with, as well as students that are difficult to connect with. This is true in my field placement and I have made connections with a handful of students, however, there are students that I have tried to make connections with that most likely need a connection the most. There is a student in my class that requires a one on one aid, however, the student does not like to listen to his aid. I made an attempt to connect with this student by reading a few books with him and it seemed to slightly brighten his day and he preformed better than his average day.

When there is a student in class that refuses to do work and appears to be lazy, but they perform above grade-level when assessed, how do you determine whether or not the student is simply bored and needs to be challenged, or is struggling behaviorally?

One improvement that could be made is to help more with making sure that all the students are on task while the teacher is teaching a lesson to the entire class. Learning how to focus the students attention on an activity or lesson will be important in the future, and also would help my student-based educator.

Asking more questions about why certain things are done in the class, or what is done for specific students is important because we are all still learning.

Another connection that I have made from my field placement to class content is when we learned about positive behavior intervention and supports (PBIS). Within this concept we discussed proactive supports such as class meetings, fidget toys, cue signals, nooks, syn-naps, etc. In my field placement the teachers use many different proactive supports for the students, especially syn-naps which are periodic rests to replenish neurotransmitters. The teachers use this by taking a few minutes to ask questions for the students to comprehend and make connections. Also, they use the website GoNoodle periodically throughout the day in order to refocus the students

Lastly, the course's textbook discusses making accommodations and modifications for students in the classroom, which both of the teachers in my field placement ensure they do. An example of this is that there are students whom struggle with some basic writing skills. Because of this, the teachers provide these students with different writing paper that allows them to complete the same activity as the entire class.
