         <description><![CDATA[<p>In Portugal, the school year generally begins in mid-September and ends in mid-December for the first semester, followed by a Christmas and New Year's break. Classes typically resume in early January and end in April or June, depending on the educational level, with summer vacation at the end of the school year.</p><p>In Portugal, compulsory schooling begins at age 6. Children can start earlier, at age 5, if they turn 6 before December 31 of the same year.
