There are several ways to describe the atmosphere in Hamlet. However, the most apt description is dark and sullen. It's created by the consistent sad undertones, for example, when Hamlet's father dies and everyone's supposed to be mourning, but only Hamlet is. "Though yet of Hamlet our dear brother's death/The memory be green, and that is us befitted/To bear our hearts in grief and our whole kingdom/To be contracted in one brow of woe, yet so far hath discretion fought with nature/That we with the wisest sorrow think on him/Together with remembrance of ourselves." Another way by which the atmosphere is created is in the scene by which Hamlet see's the ghost of his father, and it creates a very dark, eerie tone. "What may this mean, that thou, dead corpse, again in complete steel, revisits thus the glimpses of the moon, making night hideous, and we fools of natures/so horridly to shake our disposition."

Claudius shows that he is a capable monarch by showing that he can stay strong through morning of his brother's death. He begins his speech by saying that the kingdom has mourned the kings death and then says, "Together with remembrance of ourselves." This, in simple terms, means: life still goes on. Also he shows political confidence by stating that the states enemy, Fortinbras, is wrong to think they're weak after their king's tragic death. He addresses Fortinbras, "To our most valiant brother. So much for him."

The purpose of Act 1 scene 3 is to show how Polonius and Laertes do not want Ophelia dating Hamlet. Hamlet isn't able to make his own decision so both Polonius and Laertes do not think he is worthy of Ophelia. Polonius and Laertes do not respect Hamlet, and inform Ophelia that she shouldn't waste her time. "affection! pooh, you speak like a green girl, do you believe his "tenders" as you call him?" said Polonius. The quote is questioning how Ophelia thinks about the things that Hamlet is offering, and after speaking with her father she is even more confused on what the right thing to do is.

The ghost reveals to Hamlet some extreme news, and that causes Hamlet to act like he is crazy mad. The ghost, Hamlet's late father, reveals to Hamlet that he was killed by his Uncle Claudius. Due to hearing this news it has caused Hamlet to act quite crazy. There is two reasons behind why Hamlet is acting this way. The first reason is due to how the ghost says, "Upon my secure hour thy uncle stole, With juice of cursed hebona in a viral, And in the porches of my ears did pour the leprous distillation. . . " After hearing this news Hamlet is required to keep it a secret from Horatio. Holding this in causes him to act very add and Horatio notices this. Then, Hamlet keeps up on his act and swears Horatio to secrecy.

In Hamlet (I.ii) the queens opening speech reveals that she may be unsympathetic of the death of her own husband. The people around her are mourning still and she wants to apply to hamlets sense of reasoning by telling him to move on, life goes on. The queen says, "Good Hamlet, cast thy nighted color off... thou know'st 'tis common, all that lives must die," In this, she is telling the people to stop wearing all black and to move on from the tragic death. She never gave her son the grieving period that he needed. This quote also reveals that Gertrude is belittling Hamlet for acting with dark melancholy.

In this couplet "The time is out of joint; O cursed sprite,/ that ever I was born to set it right!" it shows that times right now are out of whack and that it is his responsibility to fix what is going on right now. But reading deeper it shows that there is disaster to come because he is going to kill Claudius. This quote is foreshadowing what is going to be happening in the rest of the play.
