         <description><![CDATA[<p>Construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa originally began in 1174, with the aim of making it a stand-alone bell tower for the cathedral of Pisa. Located in the Square of Miracles or 'Campo del Miracoli', the tower began to tilt early on in its construction, apparently around the time of the construction of its third floor.</p><p><br></p><p>The reason for the tilt was that the ground on which it was built was sandy and unstable and the foundations used for the tower were not strong enough to cope with this.</p><p><br></p><p>In 1185, there began a long period where the construction of the Tower of Pisa was halted. This halt in construction was usually due to the fact that the inhabitants of Pisa were preoccupied with a series of wars such as with Florence. Giovanni di Simone resumed construction of the tower in 1260 and, despite further pauses in construction, the Tower of Pisa was finally completed in 1360.</p><p><br></p><p>Since then, the tower's tilt has steadily increased, leading to fears that it would completely collapse. Until 1990, the tower was tilted at a 10-degree angle. However, after a very complicated and extensive project, the Tower of Pisa is now stable.</p>]]></description>

There are a total of 207 columns. The first story has 15 arches, the following six tiers each have 30 arches, and the final top bell chamber has 16 arches.</p>]]></description>
