For as much as she knows about her birth parents, or rather, her sperm donor and a stranger's womb, she had never known what it was like to have a family. The doors of Sook opened, revealing a very young Seo Rim. Chaos ensued within the gisaeng house's premise, all running about in the middle of the night to awaken the comatose and blue child and find her mother, though no avail for the latter mission. It is said that it takes a whole village to raise a child but that very night, it took so much more to nurse the infant back to life.

There were whispers to give the child back away, to abandon it like its mother had. It was not anyone's responsibility afterall.

The child would stay, and be fed, housed, loved. So it was decreed, by Fate, the Heavens and Seo Rim and the world was to follow those orders too.

She was given a name, as simple and normal for the most beautiful girl who would grow up to be tinged with innocence and empathy. Goeun. It was as simple as the life she would live but no name had been more fitting.

It did not matter how harsh the world was to Goeun; she had plenty of love to give so that was enough.

But not everyone was so accepting of the young girl.

Especially when Goeun transitioned to being a gisaeng, famed for her singing abilities and earning her keep in the house as a rightful member of the house. She had begun earning a clientele who traveled from far and wide to hear her sing but some of her sisters had long been bitten and mauled by the green-eyed monster. How could a servant child who reeked of dirt be a rose?

Jung Goeun was not meant to be loved.

It was a rainy night, flooding the streets of Hanseong with wet despair, but Sook was filled with mischief. Drunk patrons lay about, and the gisaengs were laughing, having the night of their lives. But there is a thin line between good mischief and malice, isn't there?

Some of the gisaengs thought it would have been funny to persuade gullible little Hwa to go to the shed that kept the alcohol under the guise of sisterly fun. She followed along, simply happy to hang out with her sisters but within the blink of an eye, she was shrouded in darkness and the sound of laughter grew distorted into evil taunts by the growing second.

No matter how much she pounded on the door, no matter how much she cried and begged to be let out, nobody heard. The laughter was long gone too, so all that was left behind was a young girl who was beginning to weaken rapidly until she fell to the floor, ready for death to take her.

But like we said, dear reader, Fate always has something up her sleeves.

She had no recollection of who saved her, and to this very day, that remains a mystery, but she knew that Sook would never be the same again.

And it truly never was.

The gisaengs who had played the prank were released from Sook, their fate written by their own hands but it only meant that the rest of the roses would work harder to keep Sook at the top of the Joseon entertainment industry.

Time went by and all fit well within the world, with the occasional tumultous moment but if that wasn't life, dear reader, what would be?
