Description:

This video showcases a discussion between a moon landing denier and a cosmologist who takes the counter position. The moon landing denier's position is that without the physical data from the moon program, there is no absolute proof that the moon landings occurred. The counterpoint is that the moon landing program was so expensive and so many people were involved for so many years, no evidence contradicting the moon landing has ever come to light.

Connection:

One of the primary red flags is the usage of Unexplained. The hoaxer seen on the show tries to dissuade both the hosts of the show and their viewers from believing in the moon landings by saying that there is so much that's still uncertain regarding their journey to the moon because they weren't there themselves. Although it's true that members of the public weren't also on the moon to validate all of their claims, the amount of documentation and recorded footage taken during the trip would make it incredibly hard to doctor the situation to such a degree to completely fake the moon landing. Another red flag is Proof by Verbosity. The hoaxer constantly brings up irrelevant scientific statistics and advanced terminology that are used in an effort to confuse everyone and make it appear as though he knows what he's talking about. The hoaxer also involves the idea of Appeal to Authority. He thinks because of the notoriety behind the name of NASA, their efforts and intentions are never questioned and they're trusted implicitly. This is seen to be incorrect as there were suspicions around the moon landing following the event that were studied vehemently and all of the hoax theories were dismantled shortly thereafter.

Description:

This is a short video of two co-hosts debating the validity of the moon landing. The person taking the con position says that other celebrities like himself do not believe that the moon landings occurred but were in fact staged. The video footage of the docks was not sufficient to change his mind. He needed more evidence.

Connection:

Appeal to Authority was prevalent throughout this video. The host taking the con position appealed to celebrity opinion that the moon landings did not happen. Since he is within the same community as the other celebrities, he seemed to be of the opinion that more evidence would be required to change his mind. He was very vague as to what other evidence would be suitable but was convinced that the available evidence was insufficient. His co-host took the pro side and appealed to some authority by referencing scientists at NASA who he considered great minds. This includes an element of the pseudoscience watchlist through how it appeals to emotion. Many people who watch this video are going to be a fan of the basketball players associated with it. This is a tactic to dissuade the viewers from believing in the moon landings because they wouldn't want to disagree with their idols.

Description:

Opponents of the moon landing presented an anomaly regarding the footprints left on the moon versus the boots worn specifically by Neil Armstrong. It was noticed that the tread mark from the moon did not correspond to the boot shown in the Aeronautical Museum.

Connection:

Moon landing deniers identify this as a red flag. The overall Appeal to Authority of NASA and space engineers by the general public is brought into question. The moon landing deniers show this as a piece of evidence that the moon landings were staged on Earth. How could the boot prints be different?
NASA responded to this confusion by pointing out that the boots worn on the moon were overshoes worn so that the astronauts would not bring moon dust into the capsule. The boots that are shown with the space suit were standard issue for all Apollo astronauts. This corroboration has come from both NASA and Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon. A limitation here can be seen in the lack of contextual information surrounding the photograph making this image seem like concrete evidence proving the moon landing was faked.

Description:

This video goes over countless theories and discusses with many "accredited" peoples the falsity behind moon landings. The video spans examples of many historic events that relate to moon landings and attempts to dismantle the concept.

Connection:

The most obvious red flag is Proof by Verbosity as seen by the length of the video spanning over 29 minutes. Through a simple understanding of the science associated with moon landings, much of the information was blatantly incorrect or questionable yet was taken as true at face value by all parties within the video. Another red flag is the Appeal to Authority. All of the showcased parties in the video go briefly over their credentials, explaining their association with the moon landings, in an attempt to solidify their credibility. With no proof behind their credentials being provided and no opposing party seen in the video to question or refute any of their claims, everything they say must be questioned. Lastly, references to the Ancient Wisdom red flag are made. They go over the discoveries from generations passed where people believed at the time that space travel was outside the realm of possibility. They try and persuade the viewer with the idea that solely because these people with highly inferior technology believed that landing on the moon was impossible, it still is today. An element of the pseudoscience watchlist that's found in this video is the use of scientific-sounding language. Throughout the entire "documentary", many scientific terms are thrown around by these "scientists" which I believe is to obscure their ludicrous claims and make themselves more believable.

Description:

This article purports to claim that the landing on the moon did not occur. The claim is based upon the assertion that NASA staged the landing on the moon to continue to obtain funding from the US government according to NASA Chief scientist Alan Anderson.

Connection:

This article is a prime example of an Appeal to Authority. A quick check of the NASA website's previous employees did not turn up this person's name. Additionally, the news article was found under the banner "Empire News". Empire News has printed many other misleading articles or non-factual articles on its website. In addition, all of the articles appear to come from the same author who is not searchable on Google. This Appeal to Authority could easily confuse or convince easily manipulated people to believe the source is a true NASA insider. By using skepticism and the critical thinking process, this article can easily be dismantled as seen in the examples mentioned previously. A question that should be asked is "Why is there no written, formal document associated with this claim from such a high-ranking official at NASA?". Obviously, because it doesn't exist.

Description:

This link is to a forum thread of an "investigator" on the possible moon landing hoaxes. The author asserts that through manipulation of the audio portion of a video, that sound can be heard in so-called "space". Since no sound can travel in a vacuum, this suggested by the author that it was done on Earth. Additionally, in a separate video, the author claims that the gravitational pull of the moon can be seen to be varied in certain frames. This evidence from the author is meant to lead the reader to the fact that the government is falsifying the moon landings, "a secret space program" is referenced.

Connection:

The manipulation that the author does to the video to achieve his desired proof is an example of a Red Herring. They're distracting the viewer from the original video through sound manipulation. The video should've been taken in its original format. The sounds and the manipulation could've been from any source, there is no proof to the claims. In addition, this video along with the other manipulative video of the gravitational pull of the moon are prime examples of Proof by Verbosity. They're providing a large quantity of evidence to support the author's claim but this only gives the appearance of truth. Also, the author uses these two pieces of evidence to support a larger claim that the moon landing events were actually a Suppression by authorities. His article claims that his videos have been suppressed or banned which has not allowed him to have others vet his work.

Description:

The news source "NewsPunch" published an article on the internet in July 2022 saying that NASA revealed that the moon landings were faked. The article talks about how man has never travelled into space, that all the video evidence of the supposed landing was conveniently recorded over, and that we don't have the technology to go to the moon any longer. The reporting in this article is very sarcastic and tries to draw in readers with unsubstantiated proof.

Connection:

This article highlights three pseudoscience red flags. The first is the Appeal to Authority. The author talks about an interview with Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. Aldrin's comments are taken out of context when he speaks about the inability of NASA to go back to the moon due to insufficient technology and funding. The article makes it sound like Buzz Aldrin is talking about not going to the moon, but the little girl's question was "Why have we not gone BACK to the moon" and then he gives reasons why we haven't gone BACK. The second red flag was the suggestion that the technology was not sufficient to guide the moon landing. The article cites the fact that "people did not have VCRs in 1969" suggesting that that technology was not available. In fact, the technology was available but was so very expensive that the typical homeowner could never afford it. However, NASA's budget was in the billions of dollars and was well within its capabilities. The final red flag was Proof by Verbosity. This NewsPunch article uses multiple angles to present so much "evidence" that their claims must be true. Not only do they speak about the technology but also they imply that the directory Stanley Kubrick was directly involved with staging the moon landing in a Hollywood film studio. The article also suggests that the moon vehicle was not as reliably designed when the author compares it to a street homeless shelter. This post is in reference to the pseudoscience watchlist by how money is often involved. Given the very clickbait-heavy image for the thumbnail of the article and there being various advertisements throughout the article itself, the people who wrote the article obviously have no incentive to research properly now that they've got the viewer's attention and potentially their money as well.

Description:

Demonstrated here is an instance of a moon landing hoaxer believing that the Illuminati had some ties with the faking of the moon landing. Based on the image, it's seen that hoaxers believe that if the Illuminati were to be involved they would leave behind some of their iconic triangles to signify their involvement.

Connection:

The most overwhelming red flag here is the Red Herring. This image provides very little information as to their reasoning behind why they believe the moon landing was faked and rather focuses on the elements that allude to the Illuminati, which is completely irrelevant to the situation. Another reason for belief that relates to this is Patternicity. Only someone who wishes to see elements of the Illuminati will notice those triangle shapes but someone else who has entirely different beliefs will notice another oddity, making the relationship completely null and void. A flaw with this photograph is that the hoaxer clearly lacks any evidence for their claims, misleading viewers and themselves.

It's believed among hoaxers that this was done to boost American morale and dissuade the Russians who were also a leading force in the space race to be the first on the moon.

Connection:

The illustrator of this image is attempting to use a Red Herring red flag by trying to convince the viewer that the image was photoshopped. The illustration suggests that the background was added in later to hide the fact that the photo was taken on a sound stage. A flaw can be seen here where the evidence is sketchy at best. The points of contention do not appear to be as alike as the illustrator would suggest.

1. I'm surprised at how much politics is associated with the moon landing, many of the deniers have very radical views that extend beyond their disbelief.

2. For the longest time since I was younger I've always been enamoured with the idea of visiting the moon and feeling its gravity and looking back at our big, beautiful home planet. Since then, I've watched a bunch of movies and interviews with astronauts about their brave ventures into space to understand the magnificence.

3. The thing I found most interesting about the moon landing was how little scientific understanding many of the moon landing hoaxers possess. Most of their claims are outrageous and can easily be dismantled by just about everyone who has a basic understanding of the science outside of Earth.

4. The thing I will most likely remember regarding this research is the picture of the dinosaur I used in my first post. I think, even though it's a joke, that it perfectly encapsulates the kind of ludicrosity that can be found when looking into these kinds of hoax topics.

5. I think the most harmful pseudoscience belief is Emotional Connection. This belief is the vilest as it directly preys on the connections that people built up with the important people in their lives and exploits the lapses in logic and judgement that comes with them. The least harmful belief I think is Ancient Wisdom. I think this because of the advent of the age of the internet and people being able to research things much easier. Nowadays, all it takes is a simple google search to easily refute many of the claims that are associated with Ancient Wisdom.

6. The idea that lies and falsities come in many different forms. It's incredibly important to always question the information that's given to you and the motives of said individual or source. I've been burned too many times by people who don't consider the feelings of others and I wouldn't want those close to me to experience the same hardships.
