The Rohingya, who numbered around one million in Myanmar at the start of 2017, are one of the many ethnic minorities in the country. Rohingya Muslims represent the largest percentage of Muslims in Myanmar, with the majority living in Rakhine state.Rohingyas arriving in Bangladesh said they fled after troops, backed by local Buddhist mobs, responded by burning their villages and attacking and killing civilians. At least 6,700 Rohingya, including at least 730 children under the age of five, were killed in the month after the violence broke out, according to medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).The massive numbers of refugees who fled to Bangladesh in 2017 joined hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who had fled Myanmar in previous years. Kutupalong, the largest refugee settlement in the world according to UNHCR, is home to more than 600,000 refugees alone. But in March 2019, Bangladesh announced it would no longer accept Rohingya fleeing Myanmar.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41566561

Most migrants move only a short distance- The rohingya muslims traveled from Myanmar to the border of Bangladesh.

There is a process of absorption, whereby people immediately surrounding a rapidly growing town move into it and the gaps they leave are filled by migrants from more distant areas, and so on until the attractive force [pull factors] is spent.- These Muslim countries, which are among the wealthiest nations, do extend financial aid and large donations to the Muslim immigrants and refugees. But they have stopped well short of absorbing them as citizens or even refugees.

There is a process of dispersion, which is the inverse of absorption.-There are an estimated 3.5 million Rohingya dispersed worldwide. Before August 2017, the majority of the estimated one million Rohingya in Myanmar resided in Rakhine State, where they accounted for nearly a third of the population.

Each migration flow produces a compensating counter-flow- The Rohingya muslims arrived so fast that there was no time for counterflow and eventually they were not allowed past the Bangladesh borders anymore..

Long-distance migrants go to one of the great centers of commerce and industry- . Many live in crowded camps in Cox’s Bazar district, now home to the world’s largest refugee camp. Nearly four hundred thousand children in the camps lack access to education, since teachers are banned from using both Bangladeshi and Myanmar curricula in the camps and Rohingya children are barred from enrolling in schools outside the camps.

Natives of towns are less migratory than those from rural areas. Before August 2017, the majority of the estimated one million Rohingya in Myanmar resided in Rakhine State, where they accounted for nearly a third of the population.

Females are more migratory than males. Until a few years back, the Rohingya refugees and migrants who departed Myanmar by sea had been predominantly male. Stripped of their nationality and legal rights related to land ownership, mobility, marriage, access to health, education and employment, many Rohingya men had no choice but to embark on precarious overland and sea journeys in search of alternative places to settle, hoping to find new homes for the families they left behind. Since 2012, however, more Rohingya women and girls have been joining the boat journeys, fleeing from intensified mass violence and increased risk of sexual violence targeting Muslim communities in Rakhine state.

Economic factors are the main cause of migration. Moreover, Rakhine State is Myanmar’s least developed state, with a poverty rate of 78 percent, compared to the 37.5 percent national average, according to World Bank estimates. Widespread poverty, poor infrastructure, and a lack of employment opportunities in Rakhine have exacerbated the cleavage between Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya.

http://www2.harpercollege.edu/mhealy/migrat/xp/mgraven.htm
