Students had the option to choose among the following types of projects. They presented via Flipgrid.
~ Ms. Wendy

1. "Our Earth, Our Responsibility: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" - Use recycled materials to create a new and useful product. Instructions included a Project Log graphic organizer on which students could keep track of dates, time spent, their accomplishments toward progress, and next steps for completing their projects.

2. "Celebrating Our Earth's Natural Symmetry" - Document and analyze Earth's symmetry, including drawing, finding samples in nature, and comparing and contrasting asymmetry and symmetry.

3. "Earth Day Art & Poetry" - Read through Earth Day poetry patterns and write your own Earth Day poem. Create artwork to "frame" it.

Catapult Mini Challenge

The Problem: You need to move the paperclip from one place to another with the help of a simple machine. Keeping what you know about force and motion in mind, your challenge is to design a catapult that will move the paperclip and your choice of second object (something tiny you can find in your home such as a cotton ball, dime, M&M, bottle cap, etc) the farthest.

Your Goal: ONLY using the supplies given to you (ziploc with cups, spoon, popsicle sticks, rubberband), build the catapult that will launch or “throw” a projectile “an object propelled through the air”- in this case, the paperclip and your choice of second object (cotton ball, dime, bottle cap, etc)

First, find the answers to these questions.
What does a catapult do?
How does a catapult work?
Second, build your catapult. Be sure to take a photo/video of it.
Third, fill in the worksheet provided.

Here is Mikey testing his creation!! :-)

Students have spent a lot of time reading various versions of The Three Little Pigs and have now applied their knowledge of force and motion to the story. Students were asked to create a strong house for the Three Little Pigs to stay safe in when the Big Bad Wolf comes around. They also had to help out the Big Bad Wolf and create a tool that he could use to knock down this house (It can be very tiring to huff and puff and blow houses down all day!) After both projects were completed, student had the chance to test out their builds and try to knock down the house with the tool.

The Seahorse class has worked very hard during their force and motion unit to design their very own Rube Goldberg. Students had the chance to learn about Newtons laws, simple machines, gravity, friction and more! Over the coarse of many weeks, the students created a goal, designed the project, created the project, tested and redesigned as necessary. I am so very proud of each of the students, they did an amazing job and, more importantly, they had fun while taking part with hands on learning!
