"The Necklace"

She was one of those pretty and charming girls born, as if by an error of fate, into a family of clerks. She had no dowry, no expectations, no means of becoming known, understood, loved or wedded by a man of wealth and distinction; and so she let herself be married to a minor official at the Ministry of Education. She dressed plainly because she had never been able to afford anything better, but she was as unhappy as if she had once been wealthy. Women don't belong to a caste or class; their beauty, grace, and natural charm take the place of birth and family. Natural delicacy, instinctive elegance and a quick wit determine their place in society, and make the daughters of commoners the equals of the very finest ladies. She suffered endlessly, feeling she was entitled to all the delicacies and luxuries of life. She suffered because of the poorness of her house as she looked at the dirty walls, the worn-out chairs and the ugly curtains. All these things that another woman of her class would not even have noticed, tormented her and made her resentful. The sight of the little Brenton girl who did her housework filled her with terrible regrets and hopeless fantasies. She dreamed of silent antechambers hung with Oriental tapestries, lit from above by torches in bronze holders, while two tall footmen in knee-length breeches napped in huge armchairs, sleepy from the stove's oppressive warmth. She dreamed of vast living rooms furnished in rare old silks, elegant furniture loaded with priceless ornaments, and inviting smaller rooms, perfumed, made for afternoon chats with close friends - famous, sought after men, who all women envy and desire.

MAIN CHARACTER'S :
(MATHILDE LOISEL, MONSIEUR LOISEL, MADAME FORESTIER)

SETTING :
(PARIS, FRANCE)

CONFLICT:
(The conflict is that Mathilde loses the necklace and has to give up the one thing she has to give it back. A conflict is, simply put, a struggle between opposing forces.)

PLOT :
("The Necklace" is a short story by Guy de Maupassant in which the main character Madame Mathilde Loisel aspires to be a member of high society however lives a poor existence. ... She replaces the necklace without telling her friend she has lost it, however this places her in great debt.)

THEME :
(The main themes in "The Necklace" are greed, deceptive appearances, and beauty and vanity. Greed: Mathilde Loisel's overwhelming desire to live a life of luxury blinds her to the comforts she already possesses and ultimately leads to her losing what wealth and status she initially has.)

CINDERELLA

CHARACTERS: Cinderella, Prince Charming, Lady Termaine, Anastasia, Fairy God Mother, Drizella, Gus, Lucifer

PLOT: With a wicked stepmother (Eleanor Audley) and two jealous stepsisters (Rhoda Williams, Lucille Bliss) who keep her enslaved and in rags, Cinderella (Ilene Woods) stands no chance of attending the royal ball. When her fairy godmother (Verna Felton) appears and magically transforms her reality into a dream come true, Cinderella enchants the handsome Prince Charming at the ball, but must face the wrath of her enraged stepmother and sisters when the spell wears off at midnight.

SETTING: As for where the story takes place, it seems we can reasonably assume the story takes place in France. For one thing, Perrault himself was French.

CLIMAX: It's midnight and Cinderella must leave so she flees from the palace and loses her glass slipper on the steps!

FALLING ACTION: At the story's most climactic moment – Cinderella's turn to try the slipper – the story reaches its highest tension. The prince's recognition of Cinderella begins the story's falling action, leading to its resolution: their wedding and happily ever after.

CONFLICT: Cinderella had to do her chores, her stepmoms and stepsisters. The way Cinderella was mistreated affected her life. When she wanted to go out, she couldn't. She was going through sibling rivalry, emotional/social abuse and child cruelty/physical abuse.

Mrs. Loisel was born into a poor family, but was endowed with great beauty. She was very ambitious. She envisioned herself as part of the highest level of French society. As she grew up, she was increasingly ashamed of her circumstances, but there was little she could do about it. Eventually, she was married to a clerk at the Ministry of Education.
One day, Mr. Loisel brought home an invitation to a ball, from the Minister of Education. When she looked at it, Mrs. Loisel was filled with sorrow. She sobbed, “I cannot come. I don’t even have a good dress to wear,” she wailed. Soon, Mr. Loisel bought her a dress with his savings.
Mrs. Loisel then said that the dress would look very plain without some jewelry. It was clear that her husband could not afford any. So, she went to a rich friend, Mrs. Forestier, who agreed to lend her a truly splendid diamond necklace.
Mrs. Loisel was the prettiest woman at the ball. All the important people admired her beauty. It was nearly 4 a.m. when they returned home. Then she made a terrible discovery: The necklace had disappeared! Their efforts to find it were in vain. It was gone, and they knew they had to buy another, to give to Mrs. Forestier.
Mr.Loisel went to a jewelry shop and found a necklace that looked exactly like the one that was lost. Its price was 36,000 francs. Mr. Loisel collected all his savings, and borrowed the rest from a friend at a high rate of interest.
