My name is Anna Laura Smith, I am ten years old and I like bows. I lived with my dad, it was just the two of us sense my mom died. We lived in Alabama, I went to school and he worked. We were pretty well of with money, and my ancestors were some of the first people to America! Then all of a sudden we went into total war. It seemed that the only reason we did anything anymore was for the war, at school we started making clothes and dad started making weapons at his work because of the war industries board. They were in charge of buying stuff like weapons for the war and they liked to have us help. One day dad came home with these war bonds, Dad said by buying these we were helping the war and hopefully we would get more money out of the in the long run. Then the selective service act came into place, but everyone just called it the draft. Dad had to put his name into the draft and every once in a while names would be drawn out and those people had to go fight in the war. Dad told me not to worry and that his name wouldn't be drawn because there were thousands of names in the draft, but his name was drawn. He had to leave to go to war and left me at the home front back in the US, he sent me to live with some other families until he got back. I didn't like living with those people though so I ran away to find my dad, he was still in the US training and hadn't left the country yet.

I started my journey and got on a train to go north. Along the way I saw lots of posters trying to get people to join the war or get war bonds (Propaganda) like my dad did. On the train I met lots of different people that told me many things about the war that I didn't already know. There was a family of African Americans that told me about how they were moving north to be treated more equally. (Great Migration). Another man was hiding out on the train because a new law was just passed stating that you could not help the enemy (Espionage and Sedition Act), but he was from Germany and was helping his brother. He said that he had to lay low because there was a court case (Schenck v. United states) that was protesting this new law and he hoped that it would be rejected and he would be out of trouble. A lot of the people I met were very interesting, Finally I got to the camp my dad was at and he sent me back home.
