This is an interesting set of slides (presumably used for presenting) that discusses Behaviorism, including the problems with it. I find that seeing what criticisms are presented of something can help with understanding not only what might have been undeveloped or unhelpful about it, but also with understanding the thing to begin with. In this case, it's fairly clear that Behaviorism just does not define things well enough or present useful enough solutions to be considered particularly useful.

The presentation discusses a lot of the visible figures in and around Behaviorism. I like that there are photos of the people being discussed on the appropriate slides; even just having a face to go with a name seems to help keep things in line later on.
-Thomas B.

Noam Chomsky wrote on Behaviorism before it was apparently "in vogue" to criticize it. His discussion is very interesting, albeit not always easy to follow. This paper can be accessed and downloaded through JSTOR with our school logins.
-Thomas B.

An interesting, illustrative quote:
"Study of the actual observed ability of a speaker to distinguish sentences from nonsentences, detect ambiguities, etc., apparently forces us to the conclusion that this grammar is of an extremely complex and abstract character, and that the young child has succeeded in carrying out what from the formal point of view, at least, seems to be a remarkable type of theory construction." (57)
This statement doesn't go well with Behaviorism, which seems to lead us to believe that simple operant conditioning is more important than going further and doing things like promoting understanding.

Chomsky, N.
