Their crime, it appears, is a love affair or at least a crush that crossed the tenacious lines of caste. Vishal was a high-caste Brahmin, Sonu from a lower caste. When their relationship was discovered, their parents dragged them back to the village, attacked them with sharp weapons, stood by as they were hanged one after the other from a roof while hundreds watched, then threw their bodies into flames.

Their love for each other was a pure thing but in the eyes of others, believers of Caste faith, it was a cardinal sin that a person with high dharma would even think of being romantically invested in a person with low dharma.

From an outside viewing standpoint it is a clear example of discrimination based on spiritual virtues that can be completely out of the person's control or influence, as in some cases rising to a new caste can be very difficult.
