He is talking about how we are on our way to hell. Only the air is what is between us and hell. The preacher is trying to show that there is now hope for us. Again the only thing that is holding us up is the "mere pleasure of God." This stays with the salvation through grace theme because he is saying that God is using grace to save the people. It is His pleasure and it is His choice to save us.
