Chapter 4 begins with some of the younger boys on the island playing around. At one point, Roger sneaks up behind one of the boys and throws rocks in his general direction, but never directly at him. Later, Ralph and co. notice a ship, and rush off to tell the fire managers, only to find that the fire has gone out. A little miffed, Ralph confronts Jack about this failure; however, Jack is unconcerned as he has finally killed a pig. One thing leads to another, and Jack breaks Piggy's glasses before the group sits down to eat some meat. Disappointed with his followers, Ralph leaves to plan his next speech.

In this chapter, we see Jack further distance himself from society as he dons face paint, smears blood on his face, and relishes the thought of killing. He also straight up punches Piggy; this further emphasizes his fear based leadership style.
