Also they should be work in the same job as his father. In this case, the Billy's father and old brother worked in a mine, but now, their jobs were in danger and they were in the strike all the time. Billy wanted to be a ballet dancer but they can´t  understand and accept him. The  society can't accept him. The only person in his family that supported Billy was Nan, his grandmother, Also his ballet's teacher supported  Billy to follow his dreams and he was decided to fight for it. 
Maybe, I think this story learn us about follow our dreams without giving importance to what the others will say. The perseverance is the key.

People in the village at that time think  that men are rude and strong. Men love boxing but Billy discovers he really likes to be a ballet dancer.  He knows Mrs. Wilkinson and she helps him to fight for his dream. I love the character because she supports him all the time!

Be different is not easy, but his differences remind he of the person he loves, his mother.  Billy lost his mother two years ago and he miss her. Maybe be different is not so bad if it allows you to keep the person you miss alive.
