Darfur is the home to the author's childhood memories. In the beginning of the book, the author states, "Darfur, I know to you this must be a word soaked in suffering and blood" (p. 4). This statement indicates that Darfur isn't a pleasant place. However, when reading Bashir's memoir, all I saw was beauty in a culture that I have yet to learn about. Every culture is different and I enjoyed learning about the Zaghawa tribe through Bashir's eyes.

In Bashir's village, she experienced undergoing female genital mutilation. This seemed to be a very traumatizing experience to her as a child. When Bashir underwent, she knew she didn't want it to happen. She felt betrayed by her parents and grandparents for letting the procedure happen. After reading, I wanted to know more about FGM. Attached is a video that I watched to learn more about what FGM was and how common it was.

This article here talks about the tradition of facial scarring in Africa (warning, if this article is opened there may be some photos that are uncomfortable to view). This is significant to Bashir because her and her younger brother both were scheduled to undergo a facial scarring procedure. However, Bashir was able to escape. I believe this is significant because it was a traumatic experience of Bashir's. In the memoir, she writes about remembering how scared she was and how much she didn't want it to happen. She eventually did escape, but she felt bad for leaving her brother behind. It was a very bittersweet victory for Bashir.

This is a photo from a reddit user. They also talked about growing a single white eyelash that grows rapidly and is much longer than the other lashes. Sadly, I was not able to find any articles talking about the origin of the belief of luck with a white eyelash. But, this superstition is very important to Bashir as she also has a white eyelash of her own. Ever since she was young, she was told that she was good luck to the family due to her white eyelash. I love hearing superstitions and I found it interesting that the Zaghawa tribe had a similar superstition as the Chinese doctor in the book. It really shows us how similar we all are no matter if we know it or not.
