When looking into how the Mayan city-states expanded, we see, in "The Early Maya State", it says, "the early Maya chiefs were also able to force others to take part in the public works needs to create communal projects like building temples or other ritual building. Further, trade pushed Maya society to

develop new tools both to improve farming for even more food surpluses, and to be traded." The chiefs used the commoners' labor to advance the technology and tools of the Mayan cities. If the chiefs forced the commoners to build, then it wasn't voluntary.

The Maya were a coercive state because people were forced to do things they didn’t want to do. In the text it says “The status of king was so highly regarded that when he appeared in public his servants would hold a cloth in front of his face so that the commoners could not see him. The commoners were also forbidden from talking directly to the king or wearing clothes like the king.” This shows how the Maya were clearly not voluntary because they can’t even speak to the king. In the video we watched also said that men were usually soldiers, even if they didn’t want to be.

The Maya is a coercive state because they were forced to do work they didn't want to do. Some people were forced to be slaves and do things for the king. If you were at the bottom of the hierarch, you had to obey the king and people above you. In the text the author said,"Early Maya chiefs were also able to force others to take part in the public works needs to create communal projects like building temples or other ritual building. Further, trade pushed Maya society to develop new tools both to improve farming for even more food surpluses, and to be traded."
