There were many diseases, some from rats and other rodents in the trenches and there was a little amount, and terrible food for the soldiers. There was constant noise and cramped, dirty, unsanitary conditions. There were dead bodies everywhere, the soldiers had a lac of rest and lack of water which led to dehydration.

In total there were about 26,000 casualties and 7,594 deaths.

Combining the casualties that happened in both the Dardanelles and Gallipoli Campaign casualties there was a total of about 205,000 people for the British Empire around 47,000 for the French. There were also approximately 250,000 Turkish casualties. Many Australian’s didn’t even make it to the coast as they were ambushed by the Turks on their way to the shore. The Turkey army and allies had set up the fight so that when the Australian and New Zealand people came, they would have to climb up the hill to get to the main battlefield. When the soldiers of Australia came to Gallipoli, they were shot at the shore on their way up.

One of the most significant battles was the gallipoli campaign which took place in april 1915 to january 1916. The Gallipoli campaign was a land based battle aiming to defeat the Ottoman Empire. By 8 months it was clear that at this point no one was going to come out on top. Over the next few months the anzacs were evacuated and by january 1916 all the anzacs were gone. Other significant battles include the Dardanelles campaign which was an attack that took place on march 18 1915. Overall the campaign failed because the Turks were aware that an attack had been planned and were able to build their defences. With ten ships attacking (6 british and 4 french)

The terrain contained many hills with steep ravines. Poppies grew from the ground towards the end of the war because of the beaten up conditions at nomans land. They symbolised the fallen soldiers and the red in the petals was said to be the blood of the dead soldiers.
