Puritanism is a movement of religious reform in Europe that started in the sixteenth century. The Puritans' main goal was to purify the Church of England and they had created many radical ideas upon the ideas of John Calvin. Charles II ordered that Puritans be persecuted and so they left for the New World in 1620 and founded the Massachussets Bay Colony. Within this colony, there would be a town called Salem where many witch trials would be held. The Puritans' way of thinking would be the origin to and lay the foundation of the witch trials.

Theological Beliefs Espoused by Puritans

The Puritans shared many beliefs with John Calvin who created Calvinism. Calvinism is the Protestant theological system and is develops the doctrine of justification by faith alone and emphasizes the grace of God. Calvinism has many beliefs that the Puritans shared which included total depravity, predestination, limited atonement, and grace. One of the ideas that they shared was the belief in witchcraft which helped fuel the witch hunt in Salem. Their "pure" way of thinking made them fear witchcraft because it was associated with the Devil.

Causes of Witchcraft Hysteria in Salem

In Puritanism, there is the strong belief that the Devil is actively working in the world to create misfortune for people. Witchcraft was believed to have been active in Salem because a lot of misfortunes had befallen onto people and because of foreign influence. People not originally from Europe may have also believed in witchcraft, but used it in everyday life, such as Tituba from Barbados. In Salem, Tituba would show the teenage girls witchcraft because they were bored. Soon, these girls started accusing people of witchcraft and got forced "confessions" of people being witches which added credibility to their claims

Betty Paris became strangely ill with other girls soon following, but the doctor could find no physical problem with them and so witchcraft was suspected. The girls would accuse people of witching them and would gain popularity. The picture below shows one of the trials that was held and how the girls would fake being witched in order to convict them. The popularity, however, would go to their head and they would start to accuse people of a higher social class, which would create doubt about the witch trials. By the end of the witch trials, over 200 people were jailed, nineteen of whom were hanged and one was pressed to death.

Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller is an author who has won the Pulitzer and, at one point, was married Marylin Monroe. Arthur is most famous for refusing to give evidence as to who is a communist or supporter to the House of Un-American Activities Committee. When he was pressured to give names, he refused and instead called this a "witch hunt." In order to criticize what was happening, he decided to travel to Salem, research the witch trials, and write "The Crucible." "The Crucible" was not well received by people and was only appreciated until long after he had written it.
