Chris Lynch´s vocabulary in this book is not very complex, but there are some words had enough to use google on. He wrote it so you can kind of feel what Nick (the main character) feels. There is a lot of military vocabulary in the book. The book is written so that you can tell Nick isn´t super educated.

The paragraphs vary slightly, but they are relatively short. the same with the chapters. Each chapter is about some other event, so there isn´t really any cliffhangers. The larger paragraphs explain what is going on while the smaller ones explain why it is the way it is.

the imagery and details of events and objects don´t go in great detail like other books. It does include some details that are not necessarily necessary, but just to make it more realistic. most of the details are important for the book and understanding of the book. the imagery of Nick talking to himself about recent encounters are crucial for imagining what is going on.

the book is chronological from early to later. there are some flashbacks about earlier times, but that is to understand the book. the book is very realistic with realistic outcomes. it is based on at a real location, since it is about WWII.

the plot is pretty fast with a lot of action and suspense. there is constant war around him and his buddy, Zachary. there are times when it seems like they have to fight through 7 million soldiers to get a glass of milk, but it is probably realistic in war zones. I enjoy these type of books because romance and other stuff is boring, and no one is getting killed in the process.

Nick wanted to be fighting the war since the beginning of the book. at the end he seemed to discover the ugliness of war, death, agony, bullets, bombs, amputations, blood, and all of the other good stuff like that. Zachary is the exact opposite. he didn´t want to join the marines, and then he found out it was where he wanted to be.

the theme of the book is that you should think over life-changing actions a lot, and that even the people who seem the worst, they may be useful somehow. also, don´t be afraid of hundreds of soldiers shooting you through a concrete wall; bullets probably won´t go through. and also fight back.

i think the purpose of the book is to teach other people about war. Enough gore to get them uneasy, but not enough to make them go in a corner rocking back in forth for dayz. it is important to learn about war because there is war everywhere and that there will probably be one in America eventually.
