I believe that the best use of our time is to educate students on how to use technology appropriately. If and when we teach students how to use technology appropriately, I believe that the doors for exploring, learning, communicating, and networking are opened for the 21st century learner. Educating students on how to use technology appropriately is a better use of time than trying to monitor and discipline students for entering a url site. I feel very fortunate that at Arlington Public Schools we believe in this philosophy and therefore give our teachers, students, and administration the ability to log into and social media/networking sites, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. Because we educate the students about proper technology use, we have had very few technology issues or infractions.

As much as we may want to try, as parents and educators we can't shield our children from all negative situations life will throw at them. What we can do, is teach them how to positively react and deal with whatever life throws their way. I feel the same is true online. Blocking sites doesn't mean that students won't ever access them. Instead, we need to teach students appropriate online behavior and how to use the internet in a positive manner.

Students who never learn to self-monitor and regulate their technology use will someday use it in a very inappropriate manner. The best that schools can do is to educate students and help them monitor their behavior. Just blocking sites prevents nothing as most students can see what is blocked on their phones. I do think their are some great tools that educators can use to help students learn to monitor their usage such as Classroom on the iPads.

I agree with what most of my peers are saying. We simply cannot block everything. Teaching students to self-monitor and know appropriate rules should be taught and followed. I think a good place to start would be what is appropriate at versus school. Although, some homes may not deem such sites appropriate. I also do believe students find a way. They're very smart and the reason we are constantly having to block new sites, is because they are finding loop holes in the filter system. It also drives me crazy when schools block YouTube. It is SUCH a useful tool for teachers, and it takes away an array of learning resources. Our students will be exposed to negatives in their life, I agree we should teach them appropriate responses not sheltering them until they are on their own and cannot handle it.

Our world is moving at such a fast pace, that we will never be able to keep up with what is being put out on the internet. We can not block our students from everything out there and this doesn't help them in the real world. So, we need to teach our students appropriate online behavior and how to respond appropriately as well.

Internet has a lot of content that can pop up on our screen on any website these days. Hundreds of people are working on finding those sites in over one billion websites (passed 1 billion this year), and also there are hundreds of them being creating each day. Filtering these websites at schools one way to decrease the chances of having students use internet at school on educational way, but unfortunately it is not the way 100% effective. Since there is not an option to take these websites out of internet, education should be the key to get students getting what they need out of it. Social media and social networks are where the cyber bullying is mostly exist. I think websites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. should work on their systems on filtering their access through the networks of schools.

Of course educating our students on how to act responsibly and appropriately on social media sites and the rest of the internet is the way to go. However, this will not stop most from doing the opposite of what we have taught them. Schools need to do the best they can to block some content and educate their students, but it is still up to the individual to make responsible choices.

I think it would be a better use of time to educate students on the appropriate use of technology. It is an impossible task to block ALL inappropriate content from students in schools. Students must have integrity and do the right thing even if no one is watching. What will happen when these students enter higher education and the workforce and they don't know how to use technology appropriately? It is our job as educators to ensure they know and can execute right from wrong.

Part of a schools responsibility is to create responsible citizens that contribute to our society and this includes the appropriate use of technology. It is better to not shelter and instead develop students who can make appropriate decisions about how to use technology.

I completely agree with this. It is my belief that instead of restricting access in schools we should be teaching students how to properly use technology. If students can't properly use the technology tools that they have access to in schools how can we expect them to use these tools properly when they are out in the world of work or on social media outside of school. Our school does not restrict social media and youtube. I do not have many students who try to access social media during school time.

I think there is a need for younger students to have a filter for those accidental hits on a website; however, there is still a greater need to educate all students about social networking. I think it is necessary to educate students and parents about appropriate behavior, expectations and consequences. I agree that incorporating and utilizing these social networking sites in school in order to help students practice and understand the value. Students are going to fail, but when we help them learn from their failures then we all succeed.
