In 1754 delegates from seven colonies met at Congress in New York to adopt a plan to provide inter-colonial government. The plan was drawn up by Ben Franklin, and it provided a system for recruiting troops, and collecting taxes for common defense to the colonies. Each colony was too jealous of their taxation plans, so the plan was not put into effect. The Albany Congress set an outline for the future.

The British originally intended to fight the French at Fort Duquesne, but the French and Indian allies ambushed the British before they reached the fort. This led to British defeat and the fatalities of 450 soldiers and 500 wounded. One British general eventually died due to the injuries inflicted on them. This battle was important because it made the colonies realize that the British were not invincible and they later went on to fight for their freedom two decades later.
